Dumb valve questions

Is there any size difference between output tubes (6V6)and preamp tubes ECC83 (12AX7)?

Would an amp work with output tubes but no preamp tubes?

Re: Dumb valve questions

Yes! 6l6 = Large valves;12ax7 = small valves
NO! No! NO! unless you have an input for a PRE-amp else where[ which is highly unlikely] You need a pre amp to drive your output valves.:omg:

Re: Dumb valve questions

Yeah, what he said. The pre amp gives the power amp enough signal to amplify, and tonal control over the output.

You've gotta have all the valves in there for the amp to rock.

if its a pure tube amp, no. it needs both

but there are hybrid amps that utilizes output tubes that doesnt have preamp tubes. instead, they use digital pre-amp. some even have digital modelers in the preamp. Vox Valvetrionix is one good example of an hybrid amp.it has one 12ax7 in the power tube section, even though the 12ax7 is well known as good preamp tube

Re: Dumb valve questions

That would be being used as a phase splitter then;if its in the power amp section.:ok:

Not in the VOX...The 12AX7 gets put to use in a very-low-voltage power amp configuration with a dummy load, then fed to a discrete solid-state amp. That way, you really do get some of the mojo of a tube power section.

Re: Dumb valve questions

So your saying the signal flow goes -solid state-valve-solidstate-?Any circuitry anywhere i can refer to?:ok:
