Dumble Amp - oh my god

it is the feel and interaction that matters in that end of the scale.
If I pay $30K for an amp, EVERYTHING I do will have a different feel after that, lol.

they sure muss be nice fer fellers to fetch em that much money! i reckon i'd be too skeered to even hear one!

seriously though...i'm sure they're amazing, but i'd feel bad paying that much money for an amp no matter how much money i had. i might be tempted to after playing one...but hopefully i'd have better sense than that...but i'm not a "pro" by any stretch of the imagination...as a matter of fact i'm a total hack just sitting around looking forward to a $350 dollar schecter (which i had to put on layaway) and hopefully i'll get a traynor or used Rivera for an amp in the next few months:burnout:

The guys who are buying Dumbles are the guys that can afford Lamborghinis and Posches and yachts. It's a totally different price range and mindset. Mayer and Santana have made serious money; they can afford to have a few around. Pro players, perhaps, if they can bankroll it.

It's about justifying the cost. Most of us schlubs will never have that amount of money to tie up in something like an amp.

But I can honestly say that if I had the bankroll for something like a Porsche or a Lamborghini I would probably readily pick a Dumble instead. The appeal of a sportscar to me is NOTHING compared to something that's the Holy Grail of guitar amplifiers.

Even if it's a crappy one that Howard intentionally made to sound like garbage for whatever reason just the name makes it legendary and it will acrue in value.

Wait...got to correct myself...if I had that sort of bankroll I would send out my man-servant to procure several of them for me to audition.

There...that's better.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

surely the whole mystery about these amps 'amazing' tone is rediculous, as amps are all just various electrical components, right? If the stuff this guy is using to make the amps is still in production, why couldn't someone just copy the amp and make an exact clone?

even if the amp was the best sounding amp available, and it did all the things Davey wanted it to for that price :laugh2: , a guy making someone pay up front, wait without knowledge of when the amp is ready (that could be years), and that cancels the order when they inquire is an a**hole. while it may help make his amps have a 'legendary status' or not, it's pretty immorral and a lousy way to treat your customers who are paying so much money for an amp.

Because before the amps went out the electronics were submerged in this electronics-safe plastic good that obscured everything so you could never re-create them.

Howard is at a point where he could really care less. He doesn't really make amps to make ends meet. He cares very little about whether those that get his amps like them or not. He has very little incentive to deal with customer satisfaction. He has really escalated himself to a level where he can do whatever he wants and not have any real repurcussions from it.

Read up on Dumble amps....it's an interesting topic.

A few more reasons besides the epoxy:
  1. They are individually voiced for the buyer.
  2. Because of #1, no two are identical. Which one are you going to clone?
  3. There's more to hand-building a gainy amp than reproducing a circuit. In a hand-wired amp, lead dress can make a significant difference in tone. In fact, improper lead dress can make a Trainwreck clone unstable to the point of oscillation.
FWIW, folks have made exact clones of certain Dumbles.

Right...."Jeeves would you be so kind as to pick up the Bentley at the garage and then fill the back seat with a few of those dreadful Dumbles while i'm off at holiday?"

BAHHH....I choose to remain ignorant.

If the money comes along, I'll grab a Fuchs & hope to be able to play it with a modicum of acumen that may resemble music to someones ears.

Until then, I hack away with an ignorant grin on my dopey puss!!!!

For the record, I saw him more times that I can count before the release of "Texas Flood" and he sounded great through cranked Fenders, too. I had no idea of a different amp when I heard the first album- it sounded the same as his live tone to me.

That is a testament to his tone that came from his fingers than. Because he definitely used dumbles on the first record. And of course you are my new favorite person in the world. I would have loved to have seen Stevie live but I guess I was just too late. I was playing guitar for about 2-3 years, playing acoustic and just strumming away at my open chords and quite happy doing just that, until I saw SRV on Austin City Limits and that totally changed my perspective! I knew that was what I wanted to do!

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

I always thought SRV used a slaved Fender into a Marshall before the Dumble days..........:dunno:

I'm not sure, but I do know that he used a dumble on the first album. I guess I could pull out my copy of live at montreaux and try to see what amps he is using, but I'm sure some guys on here would know better than I!

I knew that he was great, but had no idea what he was actually going to become. Same deal with Eric Johnson, to a lesser extent.

Stevie is definitely the reason I became a lead electric guitar player. He's the reason I used half the equipment i used to use! I had a bandmaster reverb head (very similar to his early fenders), sunburst strat, TS9 (modded to TS808 specs). I went through my "clone" phase, but even though I'm definitely doing my own thing, he's still there in a lot of the things I do :)

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

In an interview with Cesar Diaz, he states that SRV used Fender Super Reverbs, Twins and VibroVerbs, with an assortment of Marshalls too. According to him, Texas Flood was all VibroVerbs.

Quite from the article (ToneQuest Report, August 2000):
"However, the first album, Texas Flood, was all VibroVerbs and JBL’s. By the way, the thing you wrote in Rene’s interview about Stevie never getting the last Dumble we bought is absolutely true."

Before that quote he's just talking about what he himself was doing with amps and what he thought about different speakers.

He used....Jackson Brownes Dumble....because he was offered the deal to record at Jackson Brownes studio for free after he saw him play.

As legend goes Browne said all they would have to pay for is the tape, and Browne said something to the effect of he thinks he probably gave them the tape too.

Anyone who is a SRV fan owes Jackson Browne a large "thank you" for his role.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

No dumble in sight on the 'El mocambo' video...

For me, Stevie's tone is strongest on the first two records, though the only album where I don't really dig it is 'In step', with the exception of 'riviera paradise'. Too many amps spoil the broth?

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

From sources that I have found (one being Rene), the Dumble didn't come in to play until 1986, maybe later. He (Rene) did say that he used the Marshalls and Dumble on "In Step". Up until then he used the VibroVerbs.

There's definitely one on stage with him in the Montreaux video I saw on DirecTV a few months ago.
