Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

I ran into an annoyance with the DiMarzio Titan. The midrange is super pronouced and it's impossible to dial out w/out it sounding like ****. The mids get really jumpy sometimes cause i pick really hard. I only notice sometimes, but when i do it drives me insane. It doesnt really help that im running a mid forward od, into a mid forward amp, into a mid forward cab, and then using a mid forward pickup. It just doesnt work. I went for the titan over the juggernaut because of the price, which was idiotic. Lesson learned: don't compromise because of price

Dominion might have been a better choice given your take on the Titan.
I've read guys who have both describing the Dominion as less compressed, more open and "organic" compared to the Titan, (albeit a little less aggressive), plus it's a direct exchange if you bought new.

How about a Black Winter?

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

I've personally never been a fan of how the Virtual Vintage thing works on high-output pickups. It works on PAF's and single coils because they are broad-sounding by nature, but I feel it just emphasizes all the wrong kinds of mids on their high-output offerings. At least that has been my experience with the Dominion and the Crunch Lab.

Titan is a virtual vintage thing?

Yea, not really a fan either. I'll have to look at their new models. The serial numbers should say if they are or not I believe.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. But that does sucks. You'll have to compare to the juggernaut.

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

Too much of anything is bad. You've said it yourself. Guitarists are conditioned to worship mids these days which I believe is wrong. What counts in the end is the right balance within a mix - be it live or in the studio. A good amount of mids is necessary, but making it all about mids will get you nowhere. My advice would be to get a "scooped" pickup for your setup. Running an EQ in the loop and cutting 400-600Hz should also help. Also try lowering the pickup a bit. That also helps getting rid of overly prominent mids in some cases.

Scooped can work as long as the rest of band is geared towards that sound
I however use a lot of mids with a lot of bass and treble too
Bass:7
Mids:8
Treble:7
Presence:8
I then have a ten band EQ to go straight from my mid pushed hi gain tone to my ultra thrash scooped tone with boosted highs and lows so it rips your head off and breaks your ribs

Im a bit of a "mids worshipper" myself but this pickup turns it into a mess. I have a custom and a 59, both pretty scooped, and im not loving either of then. I think my best bet is something fairly balanced with a very slight mid boost so i can keep everything pretty close to noon, which is why im thinking juggernaut (or ragnarok maybe)

B4 i had the titan i had a slight mid boost and a slight high boost with the lows at noon. i have to have the mids at like 4 or 5 with the titan and to me it would just be nicer to have everything right with no eq except for a high boost.

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

It sucks when you hear a certain quality you don't like in a piece of equipment, then after that you can't keep from noticing it again and again. Ignoring it becomes like trying to avoid all thoughts of the camel's left knee; you just can't help it. Even when it's something fairly subtle that other people might not have noticed, it can drive you to distraction. Of course, in a case this extreme it's gotta be really annoying.

I've had midrange issues occasionally with DiMarzios in the past and I sympathize. Good luck with your eventual swap.

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

Dimarzio is very often very mid heavy in un unpleasant kinda way, imho.

I do not like the juggernauts. They're way too clean, bland. Some say 'dry', I say boring. I never thought pickups that expensive could be so... boring.

I do love the Alpha&Omega set though. Very bright, clear, articulate. The neck pickup is super glassy and responds very well to the tone pot. The bridge pickup has a neat aggression.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with BKP's quality. the jugs are just boring.

(don't say that ever to your wife or girlfriend, though: babe, these jugs are boring. Bad idea).

Funny how i had literally the exact opposite experience with those 2 pickup sets :lmao: to each his own i suppose

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

yeah the reason why i hate modern metal tone is it is all the mids tight lows glassy highs and they end up with castrated sounding guitars that are way too present on the mix, it ain't about being the most heard thing in the mix, it's about serving the song and having balance on the mix, which seems like djent guys just dont get it

also signature pickups are something to take with care, as they are fine tuned fo the guy who sig's them, they could be so fine tuned to play nice with that guy's specific plying style, guitar and rig that if you place them on something way different they will sound awfull, is good to know what a signature pickup was based from, and what tweaks it got, cuz if you don't like the base pickup you probably wont like the signature pickup

Supposedly the juggs were designed with sounding good in everything in mind...dont know if i believe it though. I have a friend who pretty much uses juggernauts in all his guitars (mayones and halo 7 strings mostly) and he recommended them for me over pretty much every pickup in existence. Ive only ever tried them in the juggernaut guitar tho, so we'll see in about a week when my set comes in :)

Re: Dumping my Titan for a Juggernaut...

sounding good in everything..... for pickups that pretty much sounds as recipe for disaster, for guitar pickups you don't want a jack of all trade master of none, you rather have a do one thing and do it right pickup that you can stretch to get good or ballpark tone through the rest of your gear

Welp...i guess we'll find out if pickups designed for a bolt on basswood guitar will work in a neck thru mahogany one
