Hi folks!
If I switch to alnico 8 in my Duncan 78, how will the sound differ ?
I play classic thrash & heavy metal but tuned to C, with Gibson guitars.
I'd be interested to hear it, I felt like it had a looser low end than the slash bridge in my les paul. The alnico 8 is going to add a wallop of low mids, so it could get muddy, I've never tried alnico 8 in a PAF type wind. I know folks here have put them in 59's with good results, so heck it might be Great!! I have however used it in a Gibson 498T and it really turned that pickup into a chunk monster in a Les Paul. I know that doesn't answer your question, but if you have a 498T laying around, give it a shot.

Thanks guys!
Well I feel the 78 is a bit on the thin side, and could use a bit more punch in the low end.
Maybe that`s due to the guitar. I`ve heard the 78 sounds great in a Les Paul type of guitar.
Since the 78 has alnico 2 I thought alnico 8 would push it harder in the mids and give it a more punchy low end.
...Or maybe not ?
Anybody out there who has tried different magnets in the 78 ?
I would just grab an emg mid boost kit and add it to the guitar, would probably have the desired effect and would save you from swapping mags on a custom shop pickup....
It's not quite the same, but I swapped the A5 mag in my Burstbucker Pro for an A8. I was trying to do the same thing you were, fill out the mids, boost output, and tighten the low end. What I got was a louder, more boomy version of my pickup. It's not bad per se, but the lows aren't any tighter, and the mids are still a but thin for me, which is a problem since I was hoping to beef up the Strat it's in. I suggest not swapping the mag and just getting another pickup designed to do what you want it to from the beginning. Not saying it won't work, but why try and make a pickup be something it's not?
