Duncan Designed Pickups ...

What exactly are "Duncan Designed" pickups? I know they are installed on less expensive Fenders and nearly all Squires. Can anyone clear this mystery? SS

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

Dang . . . I screwed up. All my USA made Duncans are on guitars that cost way under $800. :D

Btw, all my Duncan Designed's sound great too.

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

Bah - I just put whatever Duncan sounds right in whatever guitar.

Duncan Designed/Performers are nice pickups on the cheap!

The website product descriptions use phrases such as "based on the _____________" (fill in the blank). In my opinion, these do not help. They invite unfair (and unfavourable) comparison.

It has been my experience that many of the DuncDes pickups are not exactly like the US-made models on which they are based. They have a distinct character of their own which, in the right host guitar, makes for first class sounds.

The HB103N has a PAFish flavor to it and has a very pleasant tone with an A4 mag in it. I don't like the bridge version of this model; I haven't been able to get a clean tone that I was satisfied with, however it sounds pretty good with an A8 in OD mode.

I think the HB101 set Is pretty close to the '59 set, just a bit 2-dimensional-sounding for my taste.

The HB102N Is very nice with an A3, the bridge model sounds nothing like a JB, but not necessarily a bad thing... sounds quite alright with an A2.

HTH,

Ok I must get a HB-102. Are they available from SD? I can't find it on Thomann where I usually buy from.

The HB-108B was my favorite Duncan for a while, now it's the HB-105N

They're only available in guitars, so to get a set you either buy a guitar with them or grab a used set when someone else has pulled them out. :D

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

I have a 103n on the shelf that is waiting to be added to my Dean CAdillac with the JB8 in it.

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

Same goes for the earlier Performer series pickups.

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

I stuck a regular ceramic in my HB-7 bridge pickup in my Schecter 7 string and think that it will suffice until I can save up for a real Duncan. I also wired up the neck HB-7 to be able to be switched from series wiring to parallel and it give quite a bit of added versatility to it.

Re: Duncan Designed Pickups ...

The Duncan Designed pickups are great on their own right. The HB7 pu's are really good, and so is the HB101/HB103b combo..............really close to their USA made counterparts. By no means "crappy" pickups.
