Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

Just curious about any cool pickup mixes anyone's had using Duncan and Dimarzio pickups together. What combos have given you the best of both worlds?

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I have never mixed a Dimarzio with anything and had positive results. Actually I have never had positive results out of any Dimarzio.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

A long time i used a combo of a super Distortion Bridge/Stag Mag neck!
And i liked it.
Both pickups have been "left-over", so i put them together in one guitar and liked the results.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I have a Virtual T neck with a 59' bridge hum in my tele , i did try the virtual T with the SH-5 earlier on but that sounded bad in the tele.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I do not have experience with it, but I would not mind trying these combos:

Super Distortion / Jazz

Custom / Breed

but then again, Custom / Jazz would just be the better way to go!

Rock On :headbang:

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

Duncan JB/Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell....really cool setup.

I've used a Dimarzio Super Distortion and a '59 neck.....sucked because of the '59 neck...hate that pickup...bassy, muddy, undefined. Should have tried an Alnico II Pro instead.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

My '80 Dean has a DiMarzio SDH in the neck position and a Duncan Invader in the back. It sounds like God.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

My main guitar has an SK dualtone in the bridge, a DiMarzio HS2 middle, and a Stag Mag neck. I'm diggin' on it...

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I have an alnico II loaded Jazz in the neck of my Yamaha AES 500 paired with an old Super Distortion in the bridge. I can get great cleans with ripping OD and a surprising amount of sparkle from the combined position (yes, they are in phase).

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I've got a Dimarzio Hum from Hell in the neck of a Strat and Dun Des HB103 in the bridge and they are smoking.I was very surprised with the HB btw.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I have a Duncan Pearly Gates bridge and DiMarzio PAF neck in my Charvel 750XL. The PAF is nice, but I don't care too much for the PG. I'm going to put my Full Shred in the bridge and put a HB101 (Duncan/Ibanez, basically a 59) in the neck. Should sound better then...

The Humbucker from Hell is definitely a cool neck pickup. I'm amazed how they got a humbucker to sound that nice and chimey like a single coil.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I like the combination I get from have a Super II in the neck and a 59trembucker in the bridge. Both pickups have a bright sound to them. I like how I switch between them to go from heavy distortion to just vintage open distortion.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I have an Alnico II Pro in the neck of my Warmoth with a Super Distortion in the bridge. Throw in the middle Fender Lace Sensor Gold, and there isn't a tone out there I can't fudge.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

Put a JB in the bridge of my nightfly, Crusier in the middle, and Cool rails in the neck-
My wiring is a bit special, but regarless, the crusier combines well with both and is one of the most useful middle strat pups that I have ever used- Not to mention that it is extremely well built-

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

Dimarzio Air Zone / Benedetto A-6 in an ash Strat. The Benedetto's not really a Duncan, but it's licensed. The Air Zone sounds warm and quite balanced, while the A-6's very dark, even when switched to parallel. That pup has a very unique sound. I can't really explain it, it's the darkest-sounding neck pickup I've heard but it's not muddy... very sexy. :D

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

Dimarzio HS-2 (Jem pickup) in middle and SD Hot Rail in bridge of Strat; wired in parallel in the 2nd positon-- clean, it's a very smooth Strat tone; overdriven it has a modified PAF sound.

Re: Duncan / Dimarzio Mixes

I've combined a Norton with a Pearly Gates; a Super Distortion with a 59er; a Custom with a PAF; a Class of 55 with SSL-1s. My experiences were all the same: Both brands had their overall signature sounds but they just didn't play nice together. It was like having high end OEM pickups in the guitars. By this I mean, I constantly found myself tweaking my amps to either the DiMarzios or the Duncans and naturally, that wound up in a lot of tonal compromise with either brand which by necessity, caused my whole sound to suffer.

I will say this though: Duncan makes MANY more models which are perfectly compatible to my stylings and I'm quite satisfied with the ones I use. As a whole, yes, I prefer Duncans by leaps and bounds. However, with the very FEW DiMarzios I do like, I prefer them better than their Duncan counterpart(s). Naturally, this is my experience/opinion and YMMV.

A PAF type of pickup in the neck will go with most pickups in the bridge.

Always a few exceptions.
