Duncan EVH with Plexi?????????????

Maybe someone can help. I own a Modded marshall Plexi which sounds awsome. {Additional Master volume} My guitar is a Heritage les Paul with a duncan EVH. My overall tone is really nice, but I still cant get great screaming pick harmonics or really present tap harmonics. I'm lacking something. I'm not usually the stomp box kinda guy although I am willing to try. What do you guys suggest? treble booster or maybe overdrive? I'm not sure. I defiinitly don't want to color my tone. Just enhance it.

Definitely a job for a high end overdrive unit. Something like a Klon Centaur, Banzai Coldfusion, Fulltone FDII, Fulltone OCD, Barber Burn Unit, or something in the same class as those. The idea is to have a great clean boost overdrive that doesn't change the tone of your good guitar and amp. Once you find the right one, your rig will be a pleasure to play through, due to the increased gain and sustain.

+1 to what gearjoneser said keep the bad ass tone you have and add a little more gain and sustain . i have to try a cold fusion

I'm with gearjonser and shred-dog on this one. And if you can't get hold of one of those higher end units, an SD Pickup Booster will help a little. It won't give quite the kick of those others, but it still doesn't interfere with your tone.

I've got a H150 with a Jazz A2P that I run into a Maz Jr, I use a/the pup booster to get more OD and sustain. It runs $90. I also use a Boss Super Overdrive. One of our forumites John Spina also does some upgrades on those, boss distortions,and tubescreamers for a clearer sound. I like GJ's idea about a centaur but those are about $300. A Fulltone Fat boost is like a boutique verion of the pup booster with 5 more dB of gain, minus the resonance switch.

I'd be inclined to give the OCD 'Obsessive Compulsive Drive' by Fulltone a shot.
It's the favorite overdrive of the owner, Mike Fuller. I haven't personally heard one yet, but I'm willing to bet it'd sound great with an EVH/Plexi.

Or, ask RID about the Carl Martin plexitone, since he works for them.

You might want to try a Guyatone FLIP series OD. I have a very old one and it's just awesome! I bought it used. The guitar I tested it with (the owner's) was a cheap strat copy and a 10-watt amp, but the sound was just awesome! It's screaming in my JTM60. I bet that would even sound better in your Plexi.

I just ordered the OCD. Most are paraising it. Here and on harmony central. The sound clips sound pretty cool as well. I will coment soon.

WOWEEEEEEEEEE. I got the ocd today. All I can say is this thing kicks some serious ass. Has all the bells and whistles. A total tone machine without killing your original tone.

Can anyone recomend a resonably priced overdrive? That can do the job nicely.

I use a Hughes/Kettner Tube Factor and a Maxon DS-830 Distortion Master. Each are about $200 new. Both have true bypass.

I am not crazy about using distortion pedals but these 2 units get pretty nice tones. The tube factor has a preamp tube in it, and it has 2 separate settings. The Maxon is solid state but the distortion is nice and crunchy without being fuzzy. It has tone controls and the bottom does not fall out when you engage it.. that's a problem with lots of pedals that I've tried.

When I am recording, or just messing around at home, I use my Mass attenuator which lets you drive the power tubes, really getting a Marshall sound. I like that tone the best, but the attenuator is not that versatile when playing live.

Madaxeman,

Having both master volume modded and non-master volume original 100W plexis, my opinion is that this pickup which I also have in a Les Paul shines in a non-master plexi into a load resister (like a hotplate) and then into a second amp. This is how I believe EVH derived one of his primary tones.

I have no problem with getting any of the effects you describe in your first post with the two amp setup, and struggle with the MV amp.

It would be great if you could somehow try it because when you hear it , it is unmistakeable.

Even though your new pedal sound great, did it solve your original question? If so great. If not, you owe it to yourself to try a different approach.

Use an EQ like Ed did, it really does not need much once it is up and ringing.
Just some extra volume and fiddle around with the mids, remember to use the bassknob to get the harmonics to jump out, not too much or it will mud up seriously, no damm drive device will sound like that
