Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

I have inherited a Godin from a deceased friend - The Manuals and FAQs for the Godin LGX series humbuckers indicate the Neck pickups is a "Jazz II" - does anyone know if this differs from the usual Jazz pickup? is it maybe a Jazz with Alnico 2 magnet - any ideas?

"What are the Seymour Duncan pickups that are being used in the LGX, LGX-SA & LGXT?"

Seymour himself selected these pickups for us and chose a Jazz II for the neck position and put a new magnet in the Custom Custom for the bridge position. This pickup is unique to Godin and is arguably a Custom Custom Custom."

Yes, it's a Duncan - from the above, the bridge is a Custom 5 - but did they make a special Jazz for Godin - a "Jazz II" - or is this simply the current version of the Jazz, or something else?

THere is another guitar here that has a Jazz, a cheap Ibanez - but there's no way to compare the sounds given the Ibanez is plywood, and the Godin is mahogany/maple.

I did email SD a while back, but no reply.

ah, i've got it! they stuck an alnico 3 rather than an alnico 2 in the "custom custom" which turned it into a "custom custom custom" and the jazz II probably is indeed whhat you think it is, an alnico 2 jazz.

at least that's what i think it is: private: how do they sound? i imagine it's somewhat of a contemporary/modern vintage sounding setup.

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

FWIW, A2 warms and softens a Jazz N; it's a great tone, but it may be too much in a given guitar (I keep swapping between A2 and A5 in mine).

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

The best sound I've got from a Jazz set was with an A4 in the neck and an A8 in the bridge.

HTH,

More details, please. I'm not quite ready to follow my own advice and buy some more magnets... lol

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

im pretty sure the cc with a new magnet is a c5, they just werent in production yet. the jazz 2 might well just be a jazz with a2 magnet.

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

The Jazz II was a advertising copy mistake in the Godin FAQs. I think they knew it was the SH-2 and somehow, Jazz and SH-2 got combined into Jazz II. But they're the same pickup.

The "Custom Custom Custom" or "Custom Custom Plus" was the forerunner to the SH-14 Custom 5. Same pickup. Custom or Custom Custom with an Alnico 5 magnet.

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

Dude, I am so there. Seven-string Ibanez, here I come. (Wymore does sell magnets for seven-string pickups... right?)

As far as I can see, they only have the standard size. I dunno if that works in 7-string pups, but I think it might... how long are the mags in yours? If they're 2-1/2" long -- the old Gibson spec -- you're golden and can swap with abandon.

Re: Duncan Jazz vs Jazz II?

Yah, the "Jazz" isn't exactly a traditional jazz tone. It's tonally responsive, though; or maybe it just likes my retarded picking technique (I kinda draw one edge of the pick along the string like a violin bow).
