Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

i like Zakk's tone...but i dont like active pickups...so i was trying to find a great high gain, passive pickup...with enough output.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Here's my experience with the JB ON A STRAT (so maybe on your les paul things will be quite different): yes that high mid spike everybody talks about IS there......many people are complaining about it and it can get a little bit annoying especially when you are only playing alone. The problem is that the high mid spike is what makes the JB one of the most used pickups worldwide......try it with a band behind you and you will be glad that the mid spike IS THERE..........nice lead tones.......

On the other hand the really bad point of the JB, as someone else has stated, is the bass responce......i find it is not tight, and everytime i used it i was always left with the impression something is missing in the bass freq department....

Duncan Distortion is want a tight aggressive thick tone with a good amount of output.

Cheers

hmm...so now i guess its between a duncan distortion and a duncan custom for a high gain les paul.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

If the gain on the amp is sufficient (can't imagine i isn't), and you have no difficulty cutting through, or are the only guitarist, I'd say Custom seems to fit what you want. On the otherhand, I have to agree, LP + DD is awesome! I've got DD in my Paul and it's great, but I'm going with Customs (maybe 1, maybe 3!) in my Dean Caddy

hey man,
I personally didnt like the Duncan Custom in a Lespaul. For some reason, it was lacking some little things here and there.. but when I plugged the Duncan Distortion in, all the things that were missing from the Custom were there and the things that were good with the Custom got better with the Distortion.

Under Highgain.. the Distortion sits very very well. It has this natural compression to it that allows you to have a tight clear attack. I can chug all night with that pickup and i'll never get sick of it :D

Cleans on it are also good. dont let the name of the pickup fool you. I can get really good cleans with some chorus and a touch of reverb or delay in there and your set. It may not be able to produce "acoustic" type cleans but it'll be really clean.

Cheers

How would a Duncan Distortion compare for high gain music compared to a JB or a Custom?

The Distortion is a very good pickup for metal especially in a less paul :laugh2: , a custom could too fat in the bottom in a les pool :laugh2:

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Too fat in the bridge? Neck, obviously...

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Watch my lips Aceman ; too fat in the bottom !
Lespol is fat already in the bottom , so don't put a fat-in-the-bottom-pickup in the bridge ; if Zakk sound good it's because is emg81 have no bottom , he add bass after the preamp stage .

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

i currently
have a custom ceramic in my les paul and with all eq flat its very fat and nice but as i increase the treble in my amp just a little it turns to a buzz saw pretty quick.
i very much hate it.its too dam bassy as well when i put it past flat at one o clock.
Love my Jb in strat and honestly cant complain about anythng about it.
perhaps another JB for the LP?
or an anderson H3(cant complain bout that either).

Instead of increasing the treble, try cutting back on the bass and mids, then turn up the volume and gain to compensate for the drop in volume.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

gee thanks for the tip man!!
but it really is kinda pathetic the way the JB acts so much better in a lighter and brighter guitar(strat) as opposed to my custom in LP,when treble is increased.
very smooth sounding,im going for the cc.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Anyone here who plugs a LP into a Marshall owes it to themself to try the Custom 5. It's like a Custom with a sweeter tone, and still has the nice tight low end.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

I would have to say the jb. It sounds very good, sorta like get your spandex & cortez out of the locker. I liked it in my guitar.

Actually, I found the Custom to be tighter and brighter than the DD in the bottom end. That was in my hamer though.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

I like my Custom in my Agile 3000 Prestige. (I hate typing all that out, but hey...)

I tried my friend's JB and I didn't like it at all so I took it out. It just didn't have any low end to it at all, even though my amp doesn't have much of a low end to begin with. So I opted for more low end while hardly sacrificing mids and I got the Custom. I'm very very happy with it. Cuts through the other two guitarists in my band (yes we have 3) and I get a good clean sound out of them as well.

I haven't tried the DD, but I want to. Just to see how it is.

But I'm still keeping the Custom in my LP copy. It's hella good.

Duncan Custom... you WON'T regret it! I can't get enough playing "Miracle Man" with it on my Epi LP! :)

So yeah, if you want Zakk Wylde's tone, go Custom!!!

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

Is there a reason you need a high output pickup? Do you use a high output amp? If you have a modern high gain amp, choose something lower output or made with thicker wire for a bigger tone and better clarity. The best LP pickup I have ever heard is the WCR Goodwood but it will cost ya.

Re: Duncan JB or Custom for High Gain Les Paul??

I've tried both the duncan custom and the jb in my ibanez sz and schecter tempest and i really, really prefer the jb. The duncan custom seemed too thin and bright to me though its very clear sounding. The jb is good imo, a decent amount of midrange and not soo much treble to make it seem harsh like i think the duncan custom can be, only thing i dont like is that its bottom end is a bit loose, im thinking of changing it to get something witha tighter bass, maybe a bareknuckle miracle man? anyone want to help me out with this?
