Duncan needs a quick-swap system

I think it would be kinda cool if Duncan came out with a pickup quick-swap system or something..You could wire up the harness, and it would have a slot kinda like that of a PCI/media card interface, or even a plug-like interface, where you would just snap a new pickup in, and bam! Is it possible, without having the magnets mess anything up, or having it be too deep for a cavity? You wouldn't really need big screws taking up space I suppose. Just something I thought of from that old "what would you like to see in duncans" thread, but I never posted it then.

I wonder if anyone else has already thought of this--most likely.

If not, I'll patent it with seymour :)

Actually EMG has a quick connect system already... and you can make your own with simple automotive connectors...

Yup . . . I've pretty much got this done . . . on paper.

I go one step farther though. I use individual coils, that "plug" into a carriage. Remove both coils, snap the magnet in place, plug in whichever coils you want. They don't have to match.

Or, plug the coil into a single-coil carriage. So it becomes the neck or middle.

Skies the limit. ;)

Very smart....if you could make the "carriage" look stock I'd buy it.

A modular pickup... that would be cool... being able to swap coils and magnet types...

Have you guys not seen the shots from NAMM? IIRC, Scott put up pics of a Duncan quick swap system for guitars!

Re: Duncan needs a quick-swap system

Wasn't that something that Steve Morse had back in the 80's? I seem to remember some sort of system that allowed for pickups to be put in place like modules.

I think if we really need anything for pickups it's some form of standard interface for the leads and connectors. Rather than soldering snapping something into place would be much easier and more convenient.

Re: Duncan needs a quick-swap system

i'd like to take this time to notify everyone on how awesome exactly I am :)

i always seem to reinvent ideas..now..if only i can invent something that's NOT been invented before, then EUREKA! :):)

The only problem I see with the quickswap or whatever it's named, would be if you wanted to do coil-tapping, etc. Then you'd have to solder, and it doesn't work well for all pups.

No, where are they?

Re: Duncan needs a quick-swap system

I've been suggesting it for years, but I don't think they'll reinvent the wheel.

I've even though of going to an electronics store and getting a few of those connectors that have about 4 or 6 pins, like a car stereo, but smaller.
Then wire the guitars with one of those leading into the cavity. Everytime you buy a pickup, install the male end on it. Then, you could do this yourself for about $3 on each guitar. If you sell the pickup, just clip the male plug off it.

It would be great to have connectors on our pickups.... except for the following reasons:

1) Everyone would have to pay extra for the pickups to cover the cost of the connectors, whether or not they swapped pickups in the future. You guys change pickups more than the vast majority of non-Internet forum users. But everyone would have to pay the upcharge.

2) The big time drain in changing pickups is not the soldering. It's removing strings and pickguard, dropping in the pickup and re-installing everything.

3) The signal connection would only be as good as the connector.

Anyway, that's why we haven't gone that road in the past. That's not to say we won't do it in the future. But there are no plans to go that route at present.
There ya have it

Seems to work for EMG. And I know I'll take flack for this but the manufacturer should eat the cost of the part cause it will enable them to sell more pickups since they are more readily swapped out.

I agree... While the taking off the strings and pickguard may be the most time consuming parts most that i know that balk at changing a pickup balk cause they have to solder. Alot of people dont have the stuff to solder and dont want to pay a tech to do it so they skip on getting new pickups... I think they would sell more if it was an easier process... There are connector styles available that have a more than adequate connection... In aircraft they dont solder its all connectors... and none of them are exorbitantly expensive especially if you were buying them in bulk like a manufacturer... just my 10 cents...
