Duncan Pickup Booster

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

To me, the goal of the Duncan Pickup Booster is to make a Strat or Tele single coil sound like a full size humbucker and push the front end of an amp like a full size humbucker. It's been a while since I've plugged in my SD Pickup Booster, but I think the resonance control allows you to dial in the thick honk of a humbucker and adjust it to your own tastes. I don't think of the SD Pickup Booster as being designed to enhance the tone of humbuckers...IMO, it's for making single coils sound like humbuckers

Yeah, I know that it's not intended to be used with 'buckers....

.... but ya know, the Bassman wasn't intended to be a guitar amp, either :)

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I would think it would muddy up a HB, but I don't see it as intended only for singles though. A vintage gain level amp and vintage HBs can get some great singing tones with addition of a clean boost. In fact, that's a great way to "add" a second channel to a lower gain amp, without the TS mid hump, it's all natural amp gain.

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I'll jump in here...I have done it and it doesn't muddy things up for me. It is a different kind of tone as it cuts out some of the highs (or in the 2 position even more of the highs) but it's not a muddy thing...now, remember this...I DO NOT use ANY bucker hotter than around 8k with the exception of a Custom Custom and I have never tried the booster with that guitar as I feel that it already has anough drive on it's own...

Using the pickup booster with a hot bucker might lead to a muddy/murky quailty but for me in my situation it didn't...

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I'm looking at the unopned box for a Duncan Pickup Booster right now and it says on the box:

"Resonance Switch "fattens" single coil tone".

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

well...all I am saying is this. It didn't make my buckers muddy. I do think it was intended for use with singles but it doesn't add mids or bass it just cuts some highs...

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

Has anyone tried it with alternative singles? Like jazzmaster, jaguar, p 90's or even filtertrons (i know they are humbuckers but brighter then normal sized hums)

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I've tried the resonance switch with humbuckers, but can't think of any reason I'd want to use it that way. Its kinda like rolling back the tone control.

Where it does shine, however, is used with a vintage Tele bridge, like my Antiquity. By engaging the booster, with the switch on "1", its like going from a vintage pup to a hot overwound pup, like a QP or something. Very cool application.

Hmm... whenever I play leads, I typically roll back the tone knob a bit. Seems like that might be something I found useful.

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I only tried it when I first got the booster, but I can only remember that I didn't like the resonance switch with my hums. Way too muffled. I love the booster though!

Re: Duncan Pickup Booster

I sometimes wonder if the resonance switch is a distraction to people who would otherwise buy one of these. I seriously think every pedalboard needs one of these babies. I'm putting the rig together for NAMM and I have two boosters in there. One is first, and the other is late in the chain after all the overdrives. I'm not using the resonance switch in either and they're perfect clean boosts.

I probably should show off the resonance switch when I'm demoing single coils, but I've always used it for clean boost only. That Tele bridge pickup example is absolutely priceless. I've always been torn between the two Tele camps. I want Antiquity vintage but also QP beef, and previously it's just left me thinking about various tapping winds (some of which I've tried). It's almost paralyzed me in a way that I don't have any Teles. I just have some Tele pickups in custom guitars that aren't Tele shaped. I'm going to have to try a vintage Tele wind with the Booster now.
