Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

It was the extra magnet on the bottom that threw me off.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Sorry about that. I currently have a Distortion with the big ceramic in the center flanked by 2 ceramic spacer magnets. I have 2 A8s on the way and I'm gonna try one in the center of a Custom flanked by ceramic spacers.

So you cant grind an A2 and an A5 in half and place them so that the top stings have the A5 side and the bottom will have the A2? How do the shawbuckers work then?

I would think that would mess with the magnetism, though.

Talking about "mixed magnets" in a humbucker:

*Not* a good idea. The person that cogitated this contraception obviously have no knowledge about magnets, magnetic field shaping and flux path direction in p'up design. Four points of flux storming, flux chaos and perennial degaussing. Swell! ;)

Lt, could you shed light on the effect of having some type of Alnico either oriented or unoriented, flanked by ceramic spacers?

Everything I know about magnets (which isn't a lot, but more than most) says that pic is a disaster, but I hope the person who made it also makes that pickup in real life and discovers that.

Well, the inherent tonefootprint of all magnets is proportional to its MASS. So, the ceramic spacers won't have such a big charge that will degauss the bar to a point that will compromise its tone, however, it'll make the whole p'up sound louder but thinner overall tone than just using the central mag alone.

In a nutshell, it'll make an A2 sound closer to an A8, but with a metallic pick attack. The best result overall result I've obtained was with a 15K wind, A2 bar mag and two ceramic spacers. PAF-like winds didn't fare well, as they turned both sterile and obnoxious. The very opposite of the PAF tonefootprint.

HTH,

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

I had had the idea of putting Ceramic spacers in a JB. Probably wouldn't be such a good idea, except for extreme metal. But then, that's what I'd be using it for.

It can be done, just don't get your hopes up for heavenly tone, specially with a such a finnicky, ingrateful beast like the JB is.

What about simplifying that with an A5 on the bass and A2 on the trebles and a spacer in between to put some distance between the actual magnets while still having them contact the poles?

Really, heavenly is the furthest from what I would expect. I would be looking for hellish, nasty ultra high gain raunch.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

The Juggernaught bridge from Bareknuckle use ceramic and alnico magnets as far as I'm aware.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

I tried it with A2 and ceramic spacers in a JB/Custom and it sounded pretty good to me. I could hear the characteristics of both magnets. I'm cooking up a rock pickguard right now with a lil 59 neck and a Custom bridge with A8 and ceramic spacers.

That'll be the equivalent of trying to polish a turd. Bad is bad, it doesn't matter how you put it.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Demanic o Demanic. I got it all wired up today. (Fret level and new nut, too.) It sounds pretty good. It sounds like a Custom but with a bit of the vibe from the alnico 8 in the center. Seems to me that although ceramic can sometimes be the harshest, A5 and 8 are more precise. So it sounds like a ceramic pup but with more precision and mojo. I dig it and will probably keep it.

I glued 4 half picks together to boost the A8 in the center.
