Duncan Solar?

Re: Duncan Solar?

Any spec updates from Xavier or masta'c? A couple more of these have popped up online and I kinda want to grab one.

Re: Duncan Solar?

Forgot about this. I never heard back about the DCR, so I'll have to follow up on that.

Nonetheless, they're going for less than $30 each on eBay...you should just pick one up and check it out! Maybe ask the seller to check DCR for you :)

Re: Duncan Solar?

Yep, those are the ones I'm looking at. Already asked the seller for specs, which they declined to provide. I've been hesitating cause I don't want to end up with another Distortion clone, if that what it end up being. But what the hay, guess I'll just go for it.

Re: Duncan Solar?

I can now say that the Duncan Solar and the Custom 5 sound very similar, considering that I have tried both in 2 different guitars (Washburn Solar and Yamaha SG). I have just been sent a couple of pickups to try in the Washburn ,so next week I'll be able to provide the DC resistance of the Solar bridge.

Hi Evan , good to see you back ! Yes you know me :)

Re: Duncan Solar?

Specs from the 7 string model:

Neck - 4.29k
Bridge - 7.8k

It appears only one coil was measured on each, and I assume that the coils are matched.

I'm curious to know how much 6 and 7 string models differ with their specs.

Re: Duncan Solar?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, guys, but it's relevant.

The new Solar guitars come with pickups labeled as Duncan Solar pickups but I was told that they're not actually made by the Seymour Duncan company. Mincer, you got any scuttlebutt on that?

Re: Duncan Solar?

I got nothing. I heard some others talking about them on another forum, but the only info I had was this initial thread. If there is an official statement about it, I will certainly clarify it in threads where it comes up, but these guitars are pretty new (so is his guitar company) so I am not sure if these are true USA Duncans or Duncan Designed.

Re: Duncan Solar?

He mentions here they're neither Duncan US nor Duncan Designed:

I'm confused.

Interesting...

I would imagine if they say Duncan on them that they have to have something to do with Seymour Duncan.

Re: Duncan Solar?

I haven't gotten an official response yet, but pics help a lot. They don't say 'Seymour Duncan' nor 'Made in the USA' but have a sticker on the back saying 'Duncan Designed', so overseas it is (unless I am corrected). But I wonder why it doesn't say DD on the front.

Re: Duncan Solar?

Per his video: They're not the same as "Duncan Designed", but they were "designed by Duncan" and are not "Duncan USA" :33:

Translation: They are equivalent to the typical "Duncan Designed" products (made in the same factory with the same materials), but the wind and finish are not the same as those found in the standard-production "Duncan Designed" models

By the way, $1100 USD + shipping for an Indonesian-made axe with non-USA pickups and the same finishes I can buy on a Korean-made Chapman guitar at half the price? No thanks! Some are less, but what's the difference between these and his Washburn sig? Come to think of it...I bet Washburn is behind this venture :)

This was my takeaway as well.

But I wonder why it doesn't say DD on the front.

It says Duncan Solar on the front, but it's in black and very hard to see in the picture above.

Several months ago a few of these popped up on eBay. I finally decided to grab a bridge. The seller sent the neck pup and hasn't made good on his promise to refund/exchange. So I've got a Solar neck.

I have not installed it yet, but it reads 7.55k and appears to have a polished Alnico magnet.
