Duncans in 1980s Kramers

Anyone know which Duncans were used in the Kramer Focus line of the 1980s? Particularly the 1000,2000 series.

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

Most likely a JB. Kramer also used the Full Shred, Trembucker, and Jazz. But I'm not sure if those were ever used in the Focus series.

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

IIRC only the American guitars had JB's? I also believe the Focus series had Schaller's?

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

From my recollection, most early American Kramers had Schallers. Kramer started to use Duncan JB and stack singles. Night swans had full shred and JB, pro axe had parallel axis.

The focus were imports. Some had Duncan designed pickups. No idea what the others had

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

The 2 stock Focus' I had were from the mid 80's and had Gotoh made pickups in them IIRC. They weren't bad pickups, but they were nothing to write home about either.

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

Well, the pickups in the guitar I saw today, a Focus 4000 series, looked like Duncans-had the same little holes on top where you can see the wires. They weren't Schallers-those always had the two adjustment screws on the sides.

Interesting that they could be "Duncan Designed" What manufacturer was Duncan working with back then?

CVAN-that website doesn't tell much, but I think I can accurately date the guitar I saw to 1984. Its the Randy Rhoads body shape. Body was very light-probably basswood, and had that killer MIJ Candy Apple Red finish (I always liked the way MIJ guitars did the CAR)

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

The offset V shape from Kramer was called the Focus 4000, the American series was called the Vanguard. It more than likely has a Gotoh made bucker in it.

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

The earlier models did have Gotoh, or some Japanese pickup. But, the later models did have Duncans. The Striker series had Duncan Designed. If I can dig up my old catalogs, I might be able to be more specific.

You're right, the later Focus had Duncans, but I don't think that started until 86 or 87. If the guitar he's talking about an 84 Focus 4000, then it has Gotoh pickups or aka Matsumoku (sp?) pickups.

Re: Duncans in 1980s Kramers

Plug a cable into the guitar and measure the resistance of the pickup. If it doesn't match anything in the Duncan catalog it more than likely isn't a Duncan.

I missed that. I actually had a 4000, but I bought it used. It had Dimarzios installed by the previous owner, and I put EMG's in it. My brother has it now, and I've been thinking about seeing if I can get it back.

I don't browse much anymore, but even when I was constantly looking for old Kramer stuff, the Vanguard and Focus 4000 models rarely showed up. I'd imagine they're going for some pretty coin these days. For the cost, they are still really good well made guitars.

My buddy sold it to me, for $100. This was somewhere around 1990, maybe even before that. They were pretty easy to come across back then!
