Ultex picks have been around for maybe 2 years or so, I was curious as to what those of you who've tried them have thought. I bought a few in different gauges, such as the .73 (Yellow Tortex gauge) and the 1.00 (Blue Tortex?).

I can't really decide which pick I like better... I'm not one to notice the extremely subtle details that pick changes make unless they're drastic enough. The Ultex has a smoother feel while you're holding it, but that's irrelevant as I cut little slivers into my picks for grip anyway :D. I can't tell the difference between the attack and release of the Ultex vs Tortex. Opinions? Preferences?

Tortex are fine ... they're probably the most popular pick there is

I like the Gator Grips too

I have some Ultex -- thought I'd check 'em out, but I'm not convinced they're worth the extra coin.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

i voted tortex. been using them for as long as i can remember. tried the ultex. love the way they lasted but the overexcessive clicking when the pick contact the strings can be quite irritating.

in a nutshell, ultex last much longer than tortex with more presence and clicking. tortex has slightly mellower tone compared to ultex but still plenty bright. downside is they do not last as long.

tortex. ultex isnt bad, but tortex just feels right for me

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I`m using fender delrin heavy picks. i think the dunlops is to small:(

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I think the Dunlop's are too big. ;)

I use Tortex Jazz III .88's. Get 3 dozen for 7-8 bucks, great deal, best picks made!

Ultex do have their place, though. I find they sound really good for cleans, and for some lead applications, they can be very nice.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I use the Purple tortex. For some odd reason the gauge has been scratched off of all of them... they are the biggest ones though (over 1.0mm)

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I've only ever tried the tortext between the two of them. Wasn't overly crazy about them. I use the Gator picks instead, and have for years now. They feel perfect for me, and seem to last a really long time, but then again I use the 2.0mm ones(they greyish/black ones), so I'm sure the thickness might have something to do with that.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

i use gator grips, .96mm...i like the cute smiley gator on them. never tried the ultex, but would love to- they just arent at the music store i teach at. i used tortex until the gator grip came out.

I've been using these:

for about a year now. They are slightly sharper than a regular Tortex, and I find I get faster attack with them. I have some Ultex too, but they're too blunt after The Wedge...

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

i like all 3 ultex/tortex/gator grip. but like some other people have mentioned...i cant stand the sound they make when you touch the strings with them so im forced to use nylon picks :[ haha.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I can't stand any of dunlops picks. I use fender picks, they feel beter for me.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

i use the .88 tortex and the 1.0 ultex when i use a pick.

the tortex arent as firm and wear faster, the ultex has a brighter attack

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Are ultex the smooth dunlops? If so I often play the pink or purple ones. Also play purple 2mm stubbies.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Ultex 1.14s

For playing electric they're great.

For acoustics I still sometimes use Dava control picks though.

I had a pick by Pickboy called 'Edge' or something like that.. it was really easy to use for sweep picking as it was slightly smaller and had more of a pronounced point to it. Fairly stiff too... Haven't seen them since though. I'll probably order a few next time I order strings online

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Tortex for me. Blue (1.0 mm) for electric and purple (1.14mm) for acoustic (when I'm not fingerpicking).
