Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I use the Tortex .88's or my fingers. I actually have mine custom printed by INTUNE GUITAR PICKS. I buy them by the gross. They run right about .25 cents each when you buy them by the gross. http://www.intunegp.com/

The material that they use is slightly different then Dunlop but I've been using them for quite some time now & I like them..

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I use the ultex tris in 1mm. With the 3 picking sides and the way ultex is practically indestructable, a six pack lasts me a few years.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Ultex Sharp 1mm user here. Love those things.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I'll use either but I prefer the 1.14 Ultex Sharps just because of the point.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I like the Ultex Sharps(.73 for me.) yet I can do the Tortex if needed.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I couldn't have come up with a better explanation. Ultex is all I use now for these reasons already stated. I like the attack better than Tortex (a little snappier and brighter), easy to maintain grip, and they last a long time. I personally dig the appearance, too. Only problem with the appearance is that they have a tendency to camouflage themselves if they get away from you. Stiffer than same-gauge Tortex, so consider that before buying. I'm currently using .73s, but am going to try 1.0s soon. Check 'em out. They're the picks for me...maybe for you, too.
I like Ultex Sharp .73, every once in a while I'll play the .90 Ultex Sharps, but I usually go back to the .73's because they just seem to feel right.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I like the feel of tortex on my fingers (the texture), but the feel of Ultex of the strings. I kind of like the timbre of Tortex more, so I just use that.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Wow, since I had posted on here several years ago, I have tried the Ultex, and used them for awhile. Ultimately I found them too click-y sounding, so I went back to Gator Grips or the blue 1mm Tortex. I don't like to get used to using picks I can't find in every music store, so I don't bother trying some of the more exotic materials.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

Tortex is too soft IMO, they wear out way too fast. I love ultex (2mm jazzIII shape), they last forever and have great tone/feel

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I've been using the Ultex .73 for quite a while. I bought a couple of 72 packs a few years back, and I'm pretty sure they outlast the roaches - thermo-nuclear war? No problem, the Ultex will be the first thing to start re-populating the earth.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I used Tortex for years, great picks! Then I discovered Jazz lll picks, and never looked back! For the poll I say Tortex, personally I say Jazz lll's! :)

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

i will recommend the new james hetfield black fang models. i bought a pack with 6 and they are a mix between two dunlop picks that i love.
and i use .73 as well .
and im absolutely not a metallica nor hetfields FAN.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I like Tortex. After reading the comparisons, I believe I will stick to using them.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I use Tortex 1.0mm (blue). The green ones are ok too. I’ve never tried Ultex though. My friend had some gray/black max grips that were nice. I’d like to try the hybrid Tortex Jazz III.

Re: Dunlop Picks: Ultex or Tortex?

I had already gone thru several picks till stayed with Tortex .83 (green) for several years but a couple of years ago I tried the Ultex and are my new favorite. It is not about my fingers, it is about the pick travels smoothly when hitting the string, that is good when you try to play faster.
