Do u guys know the difference between the Dunlop Tortex Picks and the Dunlop Ultex picks? What would u prefer? Any Opinions on different feels or anything? thanks.

Re: Dunlop Picks

NOPE, but i use tortex and they seems pretty good. I recently changed from.60 mm tortex picks to..73 mm picks casue i liek soloing mroe these days. Umm ultex is mroe expensive i think probably because they last longer and are mroe resistance?

Re: Dunlop Picks

the ultex are incredible. i have the heaviest mm type and it still delivers on cleans. it's very articulate and it will last for quite a while. you can do pick scrapes without the pick falling apart.

i used to have the gator grip, there's no contest... the ultex wins hands down.

Re: Dunlop Picks

The tortex picks seem as though they are made of a softer compound. They seem to be very flexible and cushy. The ultex variety are definately more stiff. If you were to take the same thickness of each pick and "A-B" them, you would feel an obvious difference. The tortex style gives you a wider selection of gauges to choose from. Right now I'm on the fence as to which I like better.

Re: Dunlop Picks

The Dunlop Tortex are great picks.
I use the .96 mm's, the purple one's, because they last a looonnnng time.
My only problem with the Tortex is that, even though they aren't supposed to, they slip right out my fingers when I'm going all crazy up on the fretboard.
Suprisingly, I find those big bags Ernie Ball "Heavy" picks they sell at Sam Goody music scores work somewhat better...

Re: Dunlop Picks

i like ultex better but i cant relize a change in tone. and they dont make green ultex picks. that is a turnoff in my books.

Re: Dunlop Picks

I prefer the Ultex picks (1.0mm). Even though they seem stiffer, it seems as though I can feel the strings through it better, but it may all just be in my head. I find the edges smoother, they seem to last longer, and pick slides don't cut grooves into them. I also find that they don't slide around as much when I get all covered in sweat, but again, this is kinda subjective and may all just be in my head.

They only thing I don't like about them is that I can only find them in that clear/nude colour, so when I drop them they're a b*tch to find.

Re: Dunlop Picks

i used to use the green tortex for years.... then i decided to switch to a smaller pointier pick (pickboy carbon nylon) and i think it has helped my playing quite abit

Re: Dunlop Picks

Hmmmm... YES i liked the ernie balls picks tooo!!!!!! thos mediums are very nice! Bu they wear out FAST, one pick scrape and its gone! I ike my new picks the yellow tortex .73's amazing picks just thick enough to play some nice solos and soft enought to do acoustic work too. I used to like ornage more but i found them too thin to be good for soloing.

Re: Dunlop Picks

I use the ultex picks too. I used to play with about 1mm and .8mm tortex picks but the .66 ultexs are great, they are soft but snappy, hard to describe, I like them tho. Defintely worth 25 cents to try.

Re: Dunlop Picks

If I had to pick one, it would be the ultex which is what I used till I found out about the jazz III.

I like the grip you get on the dunlop nylon picks...what are those called?
They're called "nylon" :D

Seriously, that's the only thing I see on the pick. I use those too, but in a slightly different way than most I'd bet. I spin them around and pick with the grip end. Gets a really nice bite on the strings, gives a really expressive sound IMO. I use the gray one and teh black ones. If I want a really raunchy sound, I use Herco gold nylon picks. Super aggressive grip area!

Re: Dunlop Picks

i just got the tortex yellow .73mm 12 pack yesterday and im really satisfied. i like it for solos and they can handle th 52 gauge e string while playing thrashy stuff. theyre cool.

i will use that same technique, i turn the nylons around if i want a that good grip. I mostly use it the "right" way but every so often i need to get a bit more out of one of those and it works really well and i think gives the string a different ring than just plain picking.

Re: Dunlop Picks

Ha! That's great! I've never heard of anyone else who does this. You know where I heard about it? Reading an old interview in Guitar Player magazine (actually, the review was new when I read it :) ) with Mick Ralphs, the guitarist for Bad Company. He said he used the Herco picks spun 'round backwards. I happened to have some of those picks at the time and gave it a try. I've been playing that way ever since (20+ years). The Herco picks are hard to find now, so I've starting using teh Dunlop nylons. Pretty good results, but I always go back to my dwindling stash of Hercos when I want "that" sound.

Re: Dunlop Picks
