I'm wondering about picking some up, as they're way cheaper than Schallers (though I own schallers and they work grea, so no need to go on about them). Do the Dunlops work well?

I prefer the Schallers...The ball bearing and spring mechanism wears out eventually and fails allowing my Les Paul to fall flat on its face at practice one day. So I don't use them anymore. The Schaller's are more of a positive lock and act as a cradle to the strap button even if they fail........

yeah, I know all about the schallers being the owner of a set. But I'm looking for an alternative for my Strat cause it locks well now, but I have money to spend on new strap locks and although Schallers are great, they're a bit of a pain to install in Fenders (cause of different screw sizes)

Schallers all the way. Dunno what the big deal is with the screw size of the Schallers. The buttons come with screws. Sure, they're a little bigger but that is only to get a good grip on the wood and for strength. I fail to see what makes it difficult to install them.

umm, I take it you've never installed Schallers on a Fender so I'll explain. The screws used for Fender's Strap buttons are larger than those that come with Schaller strap locks, so the screw doesn't fit the hole. It's an easy fix really, just use toothpicks and carpenters glue, but I'd rather just avoid the extra tedious work if I can.

Get bigger screws for it then.
There's no comparison between the two, since Dunlops don't actually 'lock' the strap. It can still fall off.

i threw a set out the other day since they were taking up space in my parts box which also has a rockinger trem in it.
you tell me if they're any good....the rockinger is still in the box with all the extra parts.
(a note for those who don't get it...rockinger trems are locking trems that came before the floyd and while they do work...they suck).

I use dunlop mostly.. I do like how Schaller has the cup if the lock should ever fail.. However. I dont like how the pin sticks out on the schaller. But, then again, the pin takes a more concentrated effort to release than the dunlop. Bottom line, both are good. for some reason, I just bonded with dunlop.
I have also tried Zepplin brand. They have a unique method too. Very good, but. the screw on top comes loose and they can fall apart.

American Fenders come from the factory with Schaller straplock buttons already on them..........Imports don't I take it?
I don't know if I'd trust my guitar to those things you pictured....they look like plastic? I've never seen one in person.

I like neither, used the Schallers for a decade.
These days I just get these plastic twisty thingies that Dunlup makes that you put over a normal strap button so that the strap doesn't fall off.
The only problem is rooms with low walls, or worse low lamps...

Both brands work fine and theres literally tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of both out there working fine for year after year.
Its just a matter of preference as to what you find works easier. I myself prefer Dunlop as I find it quick and easy to use them on the fly.
Both work fine though and aren't anything to worry about. I think you've honestly got a much higher chance of getting killed in a wreck on your way to the gig than you do having the rare chance a straplock fails.
Bottom line is though that if you jump around like a maniac to the point its something you need to worry about, just go to the hardware store, get yourself two $0.15 washers and attach your strap permenantly to your guitar so there will be no chance of it coming out.
For the other 99% of musicians out there, either brand will work just fine

I use these mostly because that is what my local store carries. I've never had a problem with them.
That other kind looks strange - I don't think I would like them at all.

I've been running the same Schallers on my Tele since the late 80's......same strap as well. The only thing I did was I used wood glue to hold the knob into the body (as I do with every guitar) and some Loc-Tite on the threads for the nut that holds the strap on.
I haven't needed to touch them for about 20 years now.
I did get to watch the bass player in my old band lose his vintage Fender bass on stage thanks to Dunlops. We had to duct tape the strap to the guitar mid-set. Afterwards the stage was littered with the little ball-bearings.
