Dynasonics Vs Filtertrons

I've been lusting after a Gretsch for a while and have come across a 6120DS at a great price. It's Dynasonic equipped rather than Filtertrons...I'd originally been afetr Trons but this is such a great price and a lovely guitar that I am sorely tempted...anyone had any experience of Dynas? I have a slight concern they may be too thin and bright.

Re: Dynasonics Vs Filtertrons

Don't quote me as gospel, but I think that Filter'trons are a kind of humbucker with 1/4" alnico 5 mags and twin rows of fillister screws while the Dynasonics are just renamed Dearmond single coils.

Re: Dynasonics Vs Filtertrons

Both are good pickups. The DeArmond style singles sit somewhere between a strat and p90. The Filtertron is its own beast and is a humbuker with a very unique sound with more clarity and punch than most humbuckers. The dynas are favorites for rockabilly tone.

Re: Dynasonics Vs Filtertrons

I have a P90 LP and love it, so that sounds good for what I want, which is a Ryan Adams alt country type vibe.

Hey there, "idsnowdog" . . .

. . . i too likie the Dyna's for my brand of Rockabilly/Psychobilly, but the Rockabilly Meister Himself, Brain Setzer prefer the Filtertrons, and Gretsch also use that on his sig. models !

Not sure what Gawd, . . . ermmmm, sorry, "Reverend Horton Heat" use ?
Will not be suprized if it is Filtertrons too . . .

Re: Dynasonics Vs Filtertrons

I have seen both players mentioned playing Gretsches with both pickups. It is part of the Gretsch mistique. Although both pickups have their own sound. Both are good pickups for rootsy rock and alt country. I have a thing for filtertrons though. I love the Malcom Young sound.

Check out The Cramps she plays a gretsch with the DeArmond single coils.

Speaking about great gretsch pups, can you buy and retrofit on other brands guitars aftermarket gretsch pups?
