Ear Candy speaker cabs

Re: Ear Candy speaker cabs

Can anyone compare and contrast Ear Candy cabs with Avatar? I'm getting a new 2x12 in the near future and would like to hear people's experiences before I buy.
I much prefer my Buzz Bomb to either of my Avatars. The Avatars are great for the money. The Ear Candy is flat out great.

Re: Ear Candy speaker cabs

Both the Avatar 2x12 and the Buzzbomb are great cabs, but they really aren't comparable in terms of design and construction.

The Avatar is basically your "typical" guitar cab: rear-loaded speakers, rear panel screwed in, full woven grill on the front, and either open-back or non-ported closed back. This is how most guitar cabs have been built for the past 60 years, and an Avatar will be just as good as or better than a comparable Marshall, Mesa, or whatever.

The Buzzbomb is quite different. It is front-loaded, which means there does not need to be a removable rear panel. Every panel in the cab, including the rear, is glued in. It is a closed-back cab, but it is also ported, which means there are small holes cut into the front to let air move in and out of the cab. It is a lot more difficult to construct a cab this way than the traditional way, but the results speak for themselves.

Another important difference is that Ear Candy builds every cab to order, and they allow for a ton of customization. Nearly every aspect of the cab, aside from dimensions and panel wood, can be chosen by you. Avatar lets you pick from a few different colors and speaker configs, and that's it. The trade-off is that Avatar is able to charge a lot less for their cabs, and they are able to fulfill orders faster.

Re: Ear Candy speaker cabs

I have not run it up against a bogner cab or a splawn cab which are supposed to be sweet.

I have my Buzz Bomb loaded with Eminence Wizards after trying all kinds of different speakers in it. I haven't had a chance to play a Splawn cab yet, but my Buzz Bomb is every bit as good as my vintage Marshall box (original G12Hs) or a Bogner 4x12.

I guess mileage varies with the Green Machines. I tried a set and I hated them with both my 2555 and my bro's 2203. Extremely bright and stiff without the pleasant crunchiness of Celestions or Red Coats. I thought they sounded like a slightly more organic EVM-12L.

after listening to a lot of Jensen MOD sound samples (speakers the Green Machine is based on) I decided that that general tone was not for me either. Clarity was great, but they were a little too hi-fi sounding for me. I dig the British speaker crunch and boosted mids so I ended up adding a pair of Eminence Private Jacks to my order. I couldn't justify $380 for a pair of Scumback M75s given my current income and playing ability :oo
