Ebonizing a Rosewood board the easy way???

Hi all, I have heard about Rosewood fretboards being died to look more like Ebony. And this may be a stupid idea but for anyone in the know, is there any reason you couldn't just use a sharpie to do it with??? Just and idea but it seems like it would be much easier that what I have heard some go through to do it.

If I were to do it, I'd just get one of those wood colored markers used for hiding scuffs and just find one for ebony.

Good idea. I have a Rosewood board that is rather plain looking so I tough I might darken it up. Thank you.

They do rub off. A few people have tried it and over time even the best application looks really bad.

Leather dye (fiebings) is perhaps the best way to go.

I like the Minwax stain pens, they're easy to use and re-touch as time goes by.

Clean the board well and wipe it down with a little napatha or paint thinner. I scrape the board lightly to make sure the grain is open before I do the final wipe down.

I'll let the stain soak in for 20mins or so and then wipe off any excess. I'll use Nomad F-One oil to seal and buff it out, seems to last longer without any issues. F-One oil on it's own really makes a rosewood board look very rich if you are not hung up on the ebony tone.

Martin stains their ebony boards..... Don't know their chosen brand. I used to have this evil black stuff made from vinegar and coal that supposedly caused cancer unless you wore rubber gloves. Looked great, smelled bad - finally got rid of it.

There are wood dyes that work. I kinda like streaky fingerboards, though. Some of the newer 'exotic' wood boards (that aren't that exotic, just rare for guitars) are generally really streaky and unique.

I really do too, but this is just kinda patchy, not really streaky. It's just kind ho-hom as far as hue. Not bad but not spectacular.

Vinegar is horrid stuff!! I can't eat pickles or most condiments because of the vinegar content. The smell of it makes me severely ill. No Joke.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I can drink the stuff. And I usually use it with every meal.

Vinegar is healthy stuff. I like sour flavors, too. I drink water doctored with a splash of apple cider vinegar every day.

Yes, but on a planet of billions, know that you are not alone.
