echoplex match

Re: echoplex match

They won't really "drive" an amp if you're meaning push it hard. But they are a great echo device. I just sold Christian mine and he seems to be loving it. I sold it because I use the Line 6 DL4 for all of my echo needs and that is a fabulous unit too. Lew

Re: echoplex match

Thats what I thought he was talking aboput as well...

You can't really use an Echoplex to push your amp into overdrive but you can use it for the BEST echo/delay box EVER...

I just bought Lew's and am completely converted...there are loads of pedals out there for delay and some of the new digital pedals can get pretty close to the tone of a real Plex but not even the Line 6 stuff is exact!

Re: echoplex match

yes i do mean to drive it, like an overdrive or tube screamer.
or even if it changed / enhanced the tone of you guitar.
Thanks, Dino

No it isn't. There's nothing like a real Echoplex. Glad you're liking it so much! Really organic sounding in a way that no other echo is. Remind me again of why I sold it to you??? LOL! Lew

I really am digging it...truth is I used delay/echo here and there but I was never really a big delay user...now I almost never turn it off...be it a long delay, short echo or a very close almost reverb like effect it sounds killer, and my Mission V Front Super just loves it!

Im not sure why you sold it to me!!!

Re: echoplex match

I used to have a Korg space echo and with the sensitivity up and the output up it did clip a little. I am not really sure that it drove the amp into distortion as much as the unit distorted the signal.

While I agree with Lew that there is nothing like a real Echoplex.

Having used a Fender (tape driven) Echo, Maestro Echoplex, and Roland RE-201 Space Echo - all suffer from the following problems:

  1. Wow
  2. Flutter
  3. Noise
  4. Wearing out
  5. Recording and play back heads plug up from tape oxide
  6. Tape replacement (Real pain in the bottocks)
  7. Need for electrical power

The Fender unit is the same type that Jimi Hendrix used in Red House and it does add slight distortion.

I now use Carl Martin's Red Repeat and it has almost as good analog echo (98% as good) without the headache of tape driven units.

Those all come under the heading of "charm".

I had the same thought as idsnowdog: the Roland Space Echos have inputs and outputs capable of line levels - cranking the output level will give a hotter signal than the straight guitar.

Re: echoplex match

That old Fender echo is a cool unit, my dad used to have one and I really dug it but it just gave it up one day and never worked again...as far as dealing with true tape echos, they do require power, and lots of maintenance but the wow, flutter and slight overdriven tone of some tape echo units is not a problem...in fact those are the things I wanted when i started using a tape echo.

Ohhhh...NOW I remember why I sold my Echoplex to Christian! LOL!

Re: echoplex match

Same fate will happend to our hot glass bulb amps someday....sigh

And our gas guzzling/global warming automobiles... LOL! ...but that'll be a change for the better.

Re: echoplex match

There were plenty of things that I found wrong with my Korg space echo, just as Lew listed. The biggest probelm I had was with its horrible reverb tank! But I liked having it on because it seemed to square off the input signal. That square waveform gave the sound some serious punch.

I later switched to a Korg SDD-2000 unit, which are solid state. It has the same warmth without the drawbacks of a tape unit. It has a modulation feature which sounds a lot like tape warble. From what I understand The Edge still uses a Korg like mine some 20+ years later because it emulates a tape delay very well.
