Ed Roman: Replacement necks? Yes or no?

Hey guys. I am looking to finish up my custom Ibanez project and need to get my hands on a neck. I am dying to get a maple neck with an ebony fretboard and Ed Roman's Custom SHop has these in stock. Has anyone had expeirence with Ed Roman's stores? I have come across mixed reviews, some people love it and some people hate it. The neck would be $396. That is a pretty decent price IMO seeing as how some used JEM and Petrucci necks are going for about $500 and up from Ibanezrules.com.

What do you think?

You'll find a lot of mixed reviews on Ed roman in general however the work of his that I have seen is good...real good. Is this a custom made neck or an Ibanez built neck? $400 is a lot of money IMO for an Ibanez so it's way over the top for just a neck but if you want one go for it...

I have both experiences with ed Roman. I purchased a Pearlcaster from him and it is VERY VERY good!! Great workmanship and a super neck. I got the ebony board and Duncan pups. I really like the trem, except for changing strings....
I also bought a pre-assembled pickguard for another strat. I am still trying to get it wired correctly.
A friend has 2 Roman guitars and they both have very good necks. (all his necks I have seen are pretty wide/flat)

I think the majority of the problems you'll find people have with him are related to business practices, not craftsmanship. I've been to his store, and he makes some nice axes. If you're buying something that's in stock you shouldn't have any problems.

Not sure if the price is right, but otherwise I would go for it.

Why not get one from USACG or some other builder?

Ed's workmanship may be on par... and the dealings should be too...

As long as you love the piece when you get it...

Is it a "custom" order or just an in-stock piece?

usacg wont do 24 fret necks and only built them to fender spec neck pockets.

warmoth make the 24 fret, but again, only to fender spec pockets

i have no idea if they would fit on an ibanez

That's funny, about a year ago I had asked Tommy for a 24 neck and body and he only replied that I'd need to get a dinky bidy because that's the only one designed for 24 fret access. He didn't say that he couldn't do me a 24 fretted neck (or fretboard, depends on the overhang I guess...).

That said, I'm not sure about the neck pocket either, perhaps asking the man himself will be the easiest way to find out, Tommy answers very fast and is extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend him as far as business practices go...

Try the Warmoth website. They make decent products and is probably cheaper than anything Ed charges. Ed's products are great from what I'm hearing, but the prices are a bit steep.

yeah i guess i should correct that...they dont make 24 fret necks for their bodies. i guess he could make you one for your own purposes. the neck pocket is set in stone i would imagine for cnc reasons

Yes and no. It takes up the traditional (SSS strat) neck spot, but if yo have a way to shift the pickup - or if it is already shifted like a guitar that was originally built for 24 frets - then you're ok.

You'd better either be good with wood or cover it with a pickguard if you're doing a conversion.

Checked out Chris Woods, finding good reviews. Think I might go with him. Called up Ed Roman and he started eating a sandwich half way through our convo over the phone. Hmmmm....

His business practices sometimes are tied in to the craftsmanship.

When you buy from him you're guessing about the authenticity. If it's a replacement part you don't know the true source of it. He could be just cutting something down and re-branding it.

He has an incredible eye for quality...no doubt. But I would never consider buying from him unless it was something that was his own and he was hot on.

But then he'd be trying to charge 3X what it was worth.

Go to www.jemsite.com and check out some of the vendors on top of the page, I think Chris Woods is one of them. There are a few that specialize in the type of neck you are looking for. The problem with Ed is that he may make some fine stuff, but if you had a problem with it, he would say it is your fault and you would be screwed.

Erm, let me rephrase that. He told me that for what I wanted (a 24-fretted superstrat) I should order their Dinky S body, the contoured heel and then I'd be set.

They make 24-fretted necks all right as long as they're for a body designed for a 24 fretted neck (in this case the Dinky S).

As for the neck pocket, yeah I also think they only use the fender pocket but it wouldn't hurt to e-mail and ask

Where would you like me to start about my dealings with Ed? That guy has screwed me over for 2 1/2 years. I have bought 3 guitars from him. The neck on the first one was so bad you had to set the action to over a 1/4 inch before it would not buzz on any string(wife bought for a surpise birthday present). He took it back after 5 visits to his shop. I bought a cheapo Jackson Kelly for my daugter, the setup from ed's shop was horrible, but that was easy enough to fix.

Now the one I was royally bent over on was my USA Jackson Soloist. You see Ed would not let you play guitars in his stores then. I bought this thing and the very next day I took it back for a small twist in the neck. Normally that would bother me too much but the thing buzzed so bad on the low E I couldn't stand it.

Well after 2 1/2 years of trying to get that little troll and his shop to replace this thing and no luck. They actually lied to me and told me they sent it in to Fender and was told there was nothing wrong with it, so I told him to just sell it to another dummy. An hour later I get a call saying that they can't sell it because it sounds so bad. One would hope that fender would never send one out sounding that bad. This was just a few weeks ago.

Well we have a new Jackson warranty shop here. I took it to him and and he is sending it off. He did call me the other day to say that the only repair made under warranty was over 2 years ago.

In short, Ed and his staff are liars.

I would buy a pack of srtings from troll.
