hey people, how did Eddie Van Halen get his sound? what pups does Duncan offer do reach his sound?

The Duncan Custom Shop EVH, you can't miss with it even if you try.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

the Seymour Duncan EVH pickup(aka the '78 model) , Marshall Plexi amp cranked, variac-ed , soaked....and ran into an MXR Phase 90(script model) , an MXR Flanger , and an Echoplex tape delay.....into a power amp and into Marshall cabs containing either 25 or 30 watt Celestions. You can start with the pup , find a decent vintage block logo MXR Phaser & a vintage MXR Flanger(on ebay)...even the new striped EVH ones are OKAY....but not as good as the vintage block or script logos. Find an MXR or ADA flanger & get a good analog or digital delay that has LINE LEVEL INPUTS so you can run it in the effects loop because it must be last in the chain of these three......GOOD LUCK.

maybe cri-su just like evh's tone and trying to replicate it. nothing wrong with that. all of us had to start somewhere. :newangel:

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

Just an intersting side note- I read a post, not sure if it was here or another BB, but it linked to a blurb about the PAF in his Kramer. It was disassembled and they found that some of the windings were twisted and/or broken. The pickup was accually working at a little over half capacity or some thing. I think they compared it to the output of a P-90. I thought it was interesting.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

Kind of a loaded question...almost like asking "how do you play guitar?" I also recommend the Custom shop EVH model. In the right guitar played through the right amp, you should be able to get very close assuming you have the talent. If you don't have the cash for the custom shop EVH pickup, try putting an alnico 2 or 3 magnet in a '59. That's the closest you can get without going the custom shop route. Of course, Eddie had a lot of different sounds. Eruption and Hot For Teacher were recorded with A5 pickups, while much of the 1984 album was recorded with a hotter alnico 2 pickup. But if you're looking for the sound you hear on Mean Street, Dance the Night Away, and Running With the Devil, the EVH will do it.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

Didn't Eddie at one point use the '59b?

I believe VHolic (is he still a member of this board?) did and did an incredible replica of EVH's sound

+1

Be nice.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

I think the most crucial ingrediant is using a nice old Marshall amp like Eddie's. That to me is the most needed element and through a nice old Marshall amp a CS '78 or Seth Lover, Antiquity, PG or even a CC or 59B would do the trick. The CS '78 is an alnico 2 humbucker, BTW...the 59B alnico 5.

another guitarist that thinks copying someone else is all you can do with a guitar .. ain't I full of prejudice?

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

thanks guys! appreciate the input. until now I have actually never heard of the EVH by seymour.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

I play about 45 weeks per year in a very popular Orlando cover band and we do lots of old VH and I can nail it pretty accurately.

I just ordered a Splawn Quick Rod and out of the box its REAL close to vintage VH. Its more versatile too with a clean channel that drips SRV sounds through a single-coil and the Rhythm channel is full on Brown-sound VHII era sounding. With a 3rd and 4th gain stage you can even get new higher gain sounds and Balance era VH sounds too.

Of course though, the MXR phase 90 is the icing on the cake. With or without reverb/echo you'll get a very pleasing VH style tone with that in front of a nice tube head.

I would never dream of bothering with some falling apart old Marshall and Variac setup. That IS NOT practical for the real world. Maybe 30 years ago,, but not now.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

My favourite Van Halen tone is on Good Enough from 5150 album. Very deep PAF sound. To me it sounds like a 59b. I think he used this pickup in one of his frankensteins.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

I have nailed it the closest with the 59/Custom Hybrid... but like Lew stated... you need the right amp... Vintage Marshall!
I actually get a similar tone that really rocks driving a late 50's Tweed Deluxe pushed with an Ibanez STL SUPER TUBE pedal(the best!) through 2 vintage Marshall 4x12's with 25 Watt Greenback Celestions...
None of the modern Hi-Gain amps sound right to my ears... too fuzzy/buzzy.
A large part of his tone comes from his playing style... I use "his tone" for many types of music... it's just a great damn tone... suitable for lots of Classic & Heavy Rock.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

Russ Parrish of the tribute band The Atomic Punks uses the good ol' JB in his Frankenstrat by Wayne Charvel.

Well put. No need to rip on the guy for copying. A good rock tone is a good rock tone no matter what your playing. I mean is there a such thing as "original" for rock tone anymore? I haven't heard anything in the past 10 years I haven't heard 10 years before that.

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

I had SD put an al2 magnet in a 59 trembucker and it sounded way cool. It was different than any seth or al2 pro....lots 'o crunch. I loved it. I regret getting rid of that axe & that p/up. If I'm not mistaken....didn't EVH use an actual Strat on on a few tunes on the 1st album?

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

Nothing wrong with good ole Edwards sound, old Marshalls/Parks and medium to low output buckers fits well in music....that kind of midrange is just right for alot of different music:D

Re: Eddie Van Halen's sound

I find his use of delay almost as distinctive as his timbre. About 240ms with some light regeneration gives that wet "Ain't talkin' 'bout love" vibe.
