Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

I have one guitar with locking tremolo. (Ibanez RG470) It's hard to change the tuning easily thus i think buying an edge zero bridge.
I need to hear experiences and answers for my questions.

1) Is it simple and accurate that change the tuning by rolling the knob behind the body of the guitar?

2) Do they stay in tune well?

3) How are the tone of them?

4) Which is better? Edge Zero or Edge Zero II.

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

1) Like any other locking trem, it's a PITA. You can tune, but not from E to Drop D for example
2) Quite well
3) I can't speak for the bridge itself, but the RG420FBZ it's in sounds huge, fat, and warm. Stock too.
4) Never tried the original Edge Zero, so I can't really answer this one.

Edit: Misunderstood the first one... The thumbwheel behind the bridge is for balancing purposes, but you can use it to tune all the strings up or down evenly, though I don't recommend it. The range of tuning is small, especially if you want the bridge to be level.

From your other thread verbatim:

I strongly advise against this. Both models require a very special routing that's very dissimilar to those of other trems. Furthermore, the price that Ibanez asks for a set either models is above the price of some superior trems, such as Gotoh's Floyd Rose.

I will answer your questions, though:
1) Yes, it is very simple, and quite accurate. The thumbwheel doesn't turn easily, though.

2) Yep. Very well.

3) Don't really know how to answer this. There is a brass block replacement for the EZ sustain block, though, and I've heard that it's an improvement.

4) Edge Zero is easier to intonate, and EZII is basically the same thing but without the intonation tool and (according to Rich from Ibanezrules!) with a slightly rougher finish.

The trem arm holder is made pretty well, IMO. The baseplate and saddle screws are too soft, IMO, but the knife edge is solid.

A pretty solid trem, but definitely not an aftermarket item.

Also, which 470 have you got? I've heard that the earliest models have the Edge (superb), later have the Lo-TRS an Lo-TRS II (****), and even later have the Edge pro (great).

The Edge and the Edge pro are better trems than the Zero variants.

there are some guys at ebay from indonesia who sell edge zero-ii for about 100 euros which is a fair price for a nice trem. I think after helicoil, they should be on par with te best OFR out there, ha!

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

Thank you very much for answers.

Does intonation change after rolling the wheel for (1/2 step or 1 step) down tuning?

Do I have to reroute the bridge section of the guitar to make install Edge Zero II?

Yes, I saw them as well. :)

D-Tuna can alter only Low E string. By Edge Zero you can alter all strings as far as i understand.

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

The intonation will most likely change, and when you change the tuning by a 1/2 or whole step the bridge itself will not be level to the guitar body, and that will lead to issues in regards to string height and notes cutting out. As for the routing, it would be a huge hassle to reroute for the Zero or Zero II. The bridge you have now might just need a setup, or if broken, should be replaced with the same model of bridge. Routing isn't a good idea.

100 euros is a very fair price. The routing however is a nightmare.

That's totally wrong. Newer Ibanez models including the low-end RG350 feature the Edge Zero II with a very affordable price. The Edge Zero seems to replace the inferior Edge III, hence the addition of 'Z' in newer models.

I think the Edge Zero II is for Indonesian made models including the Premium, while the Edge Zero is for Prestige.

I'm talking about the replacement parts' price, ie. the trem's price, not the price of the guitar itself.

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

That is cool. Practice first at some crappy licenced floyds before going for the EZ-II. Watch as many vids available. Are the inserts stainless steel? They say the new threads are much better than the originals!!! Do you have drill press/drill press vice ? Good luck bro!

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

I'm getting a refret (to stainless super jumbos) later, so I'll get the luthier to do it for me.

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

^^^ just make sure he knows this stuff. Traditional guitar techs are no so metallurgy savy. Maybe you should visit some good mechanical workshop.

Re: Edge Zero and Edge Zero II

Just did the heli-coil fix on an old lisenced floyd rose plate (with many stripped holes). I did it in less than 10 mins. Ridiculously easy.
