Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

Guy That Invented Fire RAVES that these are awesome. Moreover, they might cure my boredom. I am little unhappy with my APH1's - kinda bored. 59's are too stiff for me.

I was thinking of the Dimarzio 36th Anniv or going back to VPAFs, but then I heard these might be the Bee's Knees...lol

They are low volume, woody, reedy and kind of vintagey. I love them in my 335 with a full A2 in the Bridge. In a LP i want something with more beef, maybe its just me!

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

ive used them alot over the years. a buddy of mine has a gold top 57 ri with antiquitys and it is one of the sweetest sounding guitars ive ever put my hands on

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

I've tried 59's, Seths and APH, WCR's too but I really love my ants.
I have a set in my R8 They are very vintage sounding, wich is what I was looking for.
I would have to say very organic sounding.
I've never heard a real PAF in person but if I did I would imagine it would sound like my ants.
I think most dealers do the seymour return policy.

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

They are much more airy and open sounding than APHs or 490Rs. There's just more life in there.

In the neck they are just awesome with no reservations.

However, I think that the bridge version is a little overwound for the aged A2 in there. Mine is 8.39 Kohm which I understand is normal. It only does some things great.

And I want 4-conductor.

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

I too want 4 conductor

I have a PG in one guitar, and I think it's amazing BUT there are many times I want to dial out that high presence thing. I figured the Ants might have crunch, wood, air, and feel that I am looking for.

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

O, you NEED a set of Antiquities however they are single conductor pickups and at the price of going CS (which is what you;d have to do to get them in 4 wire) you'd be better off buying a used set, trying them and if you like them pull them and send them back to Duncan for a 4 wire conversion...it's $20 a pickup if you send them in.

They really are great pickups...guaranteed to make any guitar sound 20 years older!

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

they are fantastic pickups, I have them in my bluesbird and the only way I will take them out is if I get a starfire and then I might just have to get another set instead.

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

Converting them to 4-conductor should be pretty straightforward since they aren't potted.

Just adding a split wire is even easier, but that's useless for me.

Re: Edumacate me on Antiquities Humbuckers

How do they compare to the PG APH1 and 59? Esp in an LP?

Bass response? Treble? Mids? Feel? Do they go microphonic a lot?

You need to forget that EQ focus. The EQ is only one little detail in the whole picture.

The '59 is a very dynamic pickup that gets very snorty when you play harder. The AHP stays smooth. The Antiquities have an open, more "alive" quality to them that the APH and 59 miss, although the EQ in the neck is about the same as the APHs.
