effects of slanted pickup

Re: effects of slanted pickup

I don't wanna hijack this thread, but I did ask the question on my thread on when duncan started making trembuckers, because I noticed my Nightswan's pickups are standard spaced, and for the bridge pickup, the 6th and 1st strings are "sitting" outside the poles. Although it doesn't have fresh strings right now, I do hear a drop in volume when I pluck/pick the 6th and 1st strings. I know the practically dead strings have a lot to do with it, but have you guys experienced this?

Though I'm sure with fresh strings and high gain, I probably won't notice this volume drop.

Re: effects of slanted pickup

Humbuckers are usually slanted not to brighten up the high strings. They are usually slanted to make non-trembuckers have effectively wider pole spacing.

I used this sucker to test a Strat pickup slanted and non-slanted. It is very difficult to even hear it.

Nice job. I like seeing those types of engineered comparisons.

Re: effects of slanted pickup

i wouldn't say it's minimal, but not too noticeable. since it's the bridge pickup, there's a big drop in energy and vibration in the strings the closer you actually get to the bridge. for example, pick right above the bridge pickup, and pick closer to the bridge on the high strings. it'll sound a little thinner, but not much. i think it'll be fine though, there are many shred style guitars with the bridge pickup slanted that way and they don't sound completely bad;)

Agreed it is a noticeble difference just not huge. Since you are bringing the bass side of the pickup away from the bridge you are lowering the frequency of the harmonic content that the pickup will have on the low strings while increasing the harmonic frequencies on the high strings.

very interesting. how come it does that do u know? as in like, why would harmonic frequencies increase closer to the bridge?

Re: effects of slanted pickup

Thank you shinobi :). that was encouraging haha. i only hope that it sounds as good as i think it will sound. Lord willing, all will go just fine!

It's just the basics of vibrating strings, think about how your guitar sounds when you pick close to the bridge vs. close to the neck, that pickup is basically picking up that same difference, closer to the bridge, more higher modes of vibration are present

Not all and not linear.

Imagine the first harmonic. It has it's highest peak over the 12th string (for an open note). The closer to the bridge the less you "see" of it's amplitude.

Now imagine the -say- 14th harmonic which happens to have the highest point of the first part directly over the bridge pickup.

So, a bridge pickup sees everything of the latter harmonic and only a small part of the former.

Re: effects of slanted pickup

Brother...I owned one of those "no Bozos" cream colored Barettas back in the day. Gave what was left of it to a good friend of mine cause I rode it hard!!! Had what I thought was a pretty thick neck. Don't sweat the spacing! Drop it in and let it rip. Mine had a JB in it and it was sweet! As a matter of fact-it was the original home to my screamin demon (when they were first introduced) I got that sob before the first lynch mob album hit (I think!!!)

It's funny the cream one was right next to the black one when I went into the Guitar shop. I had a Bengal Striped Gibson Explorer on the counter when the guy said...have you seen the new Barettas yet? He pointed me at the poster of Eddie "no bozos" shot with the caption "it's simply the best guitar you can buy" and underneath were the two Kramers...I pick'd the black one even know Eddie was holding the cream one.

Re: effects of slanted pickup

that all sounds so sweet :). i got the zebra pickup specifically so that i would not confuse it with any other pickup i might get ( really like black the most!). I sure hope this sounds good. thank you guys for all your help and input i really do appreciate it. its nice to talk to people who know way more about guitar than i do for a change! haha :)
