Egnater Tweaker 40 for metal

I've been shopping around for 20-40 amps for awhile now. Blackstar is out, I prefer all-tube. JetCity jca22h sounds pretty good, but the lack of independence between clean and gain channels (shared vol/gain) is a deal breaker.

Basically, I want a perfectly clean channel 1, and seriously heavy channel 2. I love everything in between but my bottom line is sparkling clean and heavy metal. I need a head, not a combo. I think the Tweaker would look great on my cabinet and I could sell the xxx combo.

What do you think about the tweaker in the high gain department? Any other recommendations in the same price range? (less than 600) I'm hoping the local guitar shops will have a the tweaker 40, but it is pretty new so that might be unlikely.

I do like the xxx, I could get a used 120watt xxx but that is overkill, I'm not even playing live right now. I'm trying to bring down the overall weight of my gear in the event that I need to take it to a practice space or in to the repair shop. I hate lugging around that combo.

The Tweaker for is a great amp. But not good for Metal. The British/American/Vox voices are not independent. So you can only have them one at a time. The Overdrive is very Hard Rock but not New Metal and since you cannot get the fender Cleans with the British Overdrive you can't have the best of both worlds.

I had the tweaker 15 and I don't thing it had enough preamp gain for most metal genres. The tweaker 40 should be louder, more agressive, and have a lot deeper bass I would think. It could do 80's rock but I bet you'd still want a pedal for metal. The tweaker is all about emulating vintage sounds, IMO.

Even though it's 120W I think the XXX sound great at low volumes....
Not talking about whisper though...
There is not a 20W amp that can give you the headroom of the 120W head...

There's also the Krank Krankenstein Jr. in 20W and 50W

20W - USD 659
50W - USD 769

http://www.krankamps.com/products/krankenstein-jr-20w-and-50w-heads-822

there's also the Nineteen80 Jr. 20W and 50W heads

http://www.krankamps.com/products/nineteen80-jr-20w-and-50w-heads-3247

And the Rev Jr. Pro 20W and 50W

Those Kranks can be had very easily used for cheap. Too easily if you ask me, there must be a high return rate. If anyone loves the Kranks please try and convince me otherwise.

Still hoping that someone can assess the metalness of the tweaker. I have od pedals of course and I'm not afraid to use them, but I need good tight amp distortion.

Re: Egnater Tweaker 40 for metal

Tweaker 40 ain't gonna do metal. Look into the Orange Dark Terror, save up for the mini Rectifier, or man up and deal with the weight of the XXX. Or he'll, get a dolly or something.

Thanks for the input, I haven't ruled out the xxx. Mine sounds pretty amazing at low volumes which is what I'm forced to record at, I'm sure the 120w is similar. I just didn't want to buy a gigantic tank of an amp that requires 4 power tubes and weighs almost as much as my combo.

No chance for metal huh, even with some od's in front of it? Well, if anyone disagrees let me know, I guess I'll cross this one off the list.

Re: Egnater Tweaker 40 for metal

with an OD you should be OK.

I just hate the "pedal dance" of having to switch channels and kick on a pedal at the same time. Can be a little frustrating. If you're not worried about that I think you might like the tweaker 40.

Re: Egnater Tweaker 40 for metal

you can always mod it to 60W...
I dont think that the head weights more than the combo...
Anyway...
the 20watter sounds tinny to my ears...
(orange TT,engl GIGMASTER.Blackstar Ht-20 the ones I've heard)
Even the 60W engl fireball sound small next to the 100W fireballl

No worries there, my 40 watt xxx does just fine, I don't need to add any watts/power tubes. Still on the hunt for 20-40 watt options, hopefully I'll get to try a tweaker 40 soon just for the hell of it.

Re: Egnater Tweaker 40 for metal

No way you can use the tweaker for modern metal, it's killer for 60s and 70's stuff and grunge bands influenced by that era like pearl jam or blind mellon on its own, with a good OD in front of it you can do hair metal to things like iron maiden, but that's it. If you want djent type of gain you'd need a distortion pedal.
