Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

I have a Tweaker 40 Combo and im pretty sure the tubes are replaced to EHX tubes. Im not sure if the Tweaker 15 has an adjustable bias but after I got mine back from service i ended up having to bias it myself as it sounded real bland after i got it back. After the adjustment it sounded way better than before I had it retubed.

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

How is this amp? Good for cleans? I'm looking for some nice warm tube clean sounds for home use. I would then throw my friedman be-od deluxe and amt p-drive out front for distortion...
I really like the tones i get out of my Tweaker 40. All of the adjustment makes it very versatile. I typically keep the voicing in "Vintage" mode on all of my setting as it sounds more natural to me. As far as the switching options for the eq stack i found the "Brit" setting to be a nice warm clean tone, though i favor the "AC" setting as it more to my liking, I also have the gain on my clean channel all the way up as its on the edge of breakup and use dynamics in my playing to either be clean or slightly overdriven, and use a clean boost to get a nice crunch without needing to switch channels. If you're looking for just clean and using your pedals specifically for your drive sounds then running the gain from 12 to 2 o'clock seems to work well.

My preferred settings on my clean channel (from left to right on a tweaker 15)

Vintage (Voice)
AC (Tone Stack)
Treble 2 o'clock
Middle noon
Bass 10 o'clock
Clean
Gain cranked
Bright
Deep

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

Got the new tubes today. Man, TubeDepot is FAST!!!! Will report back a little later on results.

Sadly, the new tubes didn't fix the problem. Same exact issue. I'm not sure it is worth the cost of fixing either... GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

It might be an issue with the power coming out of the wall outlet.

I gave it 30 minutes... and now it seems like it is better but I get the suspicion that it might be a power issue as you suggest. Like it waivers and gets spacey... and then works fine and then randomly gets wavey again. I'll keep fooling with it...

I've had that issue with several different amps lately. I suspect that it has something to do with an old refrigerator that is running off my panel at the moment.
Running my amps and effects power supplies off my power conditioner seems to have solved the problem.

Hmm, if there was a super dramatic difference, then it wasn't the tubes. Bad position to be in. I am sorry it doesn't sound right.

Did you bias the power tubes? You can’t just plug new ones in and go....they need to be biased every time power tubes are changed.
Preamp tubes otoh are plug and play.

Edit:
I just read that the tweaker 15 does not need biasing....sorry for the misinformation

Wavey... That's a strange problem for sure. I had similar issue with old tubes in Rebel, but that out of the way, I think Demanic is on right trail; probably a power problem.

If power conditioner doesn't solve it, I would change rectifier diodes. Pretty cheap and easy fix, and could cause that problem. After that... PT?

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

I think early-gen Tweakers had serious reliability issues and would pop tubes and resistors like crazy.
Mine hasn't had issues in 7 years.

I think they had transformer issues after a bad batch from a supplier, compounded by Egnater telling folks they could swap larger tubes (EL34 and 6L6 varieties) in without any rebiasing, which helped overstress the (already marginal) transformers.

I picked up a used 15 watt combo, and will confirm that the OP's isn't right; at full tilt this thing will blow your skirt up.

The amp is loud but only with distortion. Which could be a result of tubes in general, but the clean volume on this is crazy low.

Have you opened the chassis and looked at the PCB? Blown screen grid resistors can cause this kind of thing and can be a common problem they are often not slightly overspecd to safely handle the wattage goin through them, they are probably bigger white rectangular jobs near the power tube sockets
Check for anything looking burnt or melted

Can try spraying electrical contract cleaner on tube pins and gently inserting and removing them sometimes

There's an fx loop right? Contact cleaner on a 1/8 plug and run that in and out of the fx loop jacks can help sometimes too

Sounds like there's some component that is failed or loose somewhere but the tweaker is notorious for cooking tubes, running em hot, totes could be a screen resistor or failed tube socket or trace on the PCB starting to lift from heat, or some loose or dying cap or resistor

There's a possibility the speaker connection is loose or dirty so double check that if you can too

If this is over your head or anything at all then don't poke around with the amp plugged in! Safety first! :)

Had a deluxe reverb that had issues like this but was also popping fuses and turned out was screen grid resistor, $40 fix. But yeah take it to a tech is really my best advice

Re: Egnater tweaker - this tube look ok?

Thanks. I actually contacted my buddy and he said no worries and took it back. No questions. I’m moving on and looking at different options -even at some hybrids.

Hi, you are saying the Egnater runs really hot and can eat the PT? The RCA would be a better fit for that temp?

Yes that is what my tech ended putting in mine and they've lasted for 5-6 years so far
