I just grabbed an amp w/o verb, and have also given the thing some thought...Gearjoneser (who I trust 100% about what is good and bad tone) has one and loves it!

I think for a while Electro-Harmonix pedals where considered to be bad tone news because of suspect internal wiring. I've been assured that they've fixed this and all their pedals are now hard-wired (?) and offer true by-pass. I heard this from a salesman trying to sell me an Electro-Harmonix pedal so it has to be taken with a pinch of salt. I've no idea how true this, hopefully some EH expert will be able to clear this up.
If I don't go for the Holy Grail then it would probably be a Boss RV-5. Any thoughts on this?

I had a Boss RV-3 and while the delay was prewtty good, I always had a problem with the reverb...

I have a Holy Grail (the pedal, not THE actual holy grail...) and like it a lot. It sounds really good through my silverface Fender champ. It does get a bit on the noisy side, however, once you turn the knob past the 12:00 position. I bought mine from ebay, too, some time back and the price was right.

yeah i think i need a crash course on proper effects order and what goes in the loop, what doesn't b/c i hardly use effects now but i'm nearly done buying all the ones i want and it's time to make a board and i need to figure out which ones to go into the loop and which ones if any in line with the guitar...i may have to pick your brain on that.

well that makes sence so i guess i'll put my boss floor tuner after the guitar then my ZW OD after that then my wah then into the amp and the rest of the toys go in the loop...thanks!
oh wait, where does a whammy fit in...loop i would guess or no?

Wow, band members giving Birthday gifts (other than beers)??? That's a 1st.
I like the Holy Grail because it's the only reverb unit that doesn't introduce a digital ping sound when used in front of an amp, especially when you smack a chord real hard. I'll agree that it can be a bit noisy if you use it for dramatic reverb, but you usually won't. It's also kinda sensitive to bad electricity.....if your electricity is noisy, the pedal will exacerbate the problem.
The good news is that you can use it in FX loops and directly into the input. On 4 input amps, I plug the guitar into the amp's 1st input, then run the 2nd input into the Holy Grail, out of the HG into the 3rd input. That way, on a Plexi or Bassman, you can get a nice direct to amp tone, but use the 2nd volume to mix in a bit of reverb. NEVER forget that trick!!!

how does it work? Does it have a AD-DA connection like most rack units do? If so, does it suck tone? My problem with digitech units is that they suck so much tone out of my 5150, I'd much rather play without a reverb (dry yes I know) than to live with the tone suck.
