EI 12ax7eg

I tried 2 of these tubes in V1 & V2 positions and I felt it made the gain on a high gain amp more Plexi-like, a little sweeter, and a little more character.

Drawback?

I feel like I lost a lot of volume & power. Like my amp just doesn't crank and do damage.

Anyone know these tubes?

Looks like those are different from the Ei ECC-83 that I've been experimenting with in my Blues Jr. Definitely a bit less gain than some other 12AX7 types (like Tung Sol), but sweeter and more musical. Bad reputation for microphonics from what I've read, YMMV. Mine may be a bit microphonic, but only when everything's on "12".

V1 seems to have the most impact on tone. I'm using the Ei there with a hotter JJ ECC803S in V2 and the hottest Tung Sol in V3 (phase inverter for me). This seems like it works, but we'll have to give it the long-term test drive first...

Well now I went from EI's back to the EH's I had in, then last night for fun I tried some Mesa 12AX7 Russian 2's I had lying around. Made the sound way sweeter and smoother. I am shocked at the difference these make.
