El Diablo in an SG?

Rising Farce

New member
I just picked up a Custom Shop El Diablo, and I'm strongly considering putting it in the bridge position of my SG Faded Special. The current pickup--a DiMarzio Super 3--is usually one of my favorites, but in this particular application, it's having trouble overcoming what I call "SG Syndrome"--specifically, clanky lows and thin, brittle highs.

Will the El Diablo help fill out the low end and thicken up the highs, all without sacrificing the aggressive output and snarling mids of the Super 3?

Thanks in advance.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

I had one in an SG for a while, also ran a Super3 for a bit. Ended up with a A8 Detonator, but yes, it does what you ask.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

Good to know. I was this close to ordering a WCR Ironman when the Diablo became available. It's nice to have saved $110.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

I've got an Ironman, and a Warpig too, they're all different enough that it's worth having one of each, I can't really pick a favorite.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

I have had an El Diablo and 2 Ironmans. Kinda similar, but as Izzo said all different enough. I remember the El Diablo being very crunchy and full. The IM was and is my all time favorite, and it has a low mid grind unmatched by anything i've found. Both are stellar. I want to try a warpig one day.

I think you will like it.

I find it to have a lot of roundness but still a fair amount of cut in a mahogany guitar.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

The Iommi/Diablo and Ironman are close in output, but the Pig isn't as loud until you run it up closer to the strings, and it sounds best closer than I adjust the others, so I guess they end up hitting the amp with about the same output. The ceramic Warpig is about the same or slightly louder than the others.

I'm pretty sure you'll like the Diablo, especially if you're a Super3 fan.

Re: El Diablo in an SG?

I must admit, I was initially a bit skeptical that an A2 magnet could deliver good metal tones. It sounds like I needn't have worried, however.

I'll report back once it's installed.
