Eleanor Rigby

Re: Eleanor Rigby

Fuzzface? Yeah, sure..he's being secretive about his tone , like Van Halen did.. lol

Just kidding. Seriously, I couldnt get a fuzzface to sound that good at all- mine always comes out to syrupy and all. Apparently Analogman says you need the right Fuzzface and even then it takes a ,ot of experience to get those great osunds from it.
I read last night on the Analogman's website all about his , red dot NKT's, white dot NKT's Original Germanium , high gains , and the silicons.
Judging just from the clips, my favorite is the original germanium.
It sounds like you like the one that will clean up the best, which would be the Red Dot?
That was a great video , great tone and music.

Re: Eleanor Rigby

First let me say that I hate "remakes" & I'm one of those that think the Beatle's tunes are forbidden ground....just leave well enough alone.

That said, that friggin' ROCKED ! Loved the the whole overall feel of the video & the tones were subtle & smooth throughout.

Great job :beerchug:

Terry, I hear ya man...I have to be honest...when I got thje call fromJohn about the track he told me what it was and I was very nervous about getting involved but after a listen I decided I could be part of the project!

Like I said John did almost everything so I can't take too much (if any) real credit but I'm glad you like it!

HA!

No really...a Fuzz face, just a 90's Dunlop one but modded by AnalogMan.

It did take me a while of messing to get a good fat but still clear sound from a Fuzz Face but it was worth it to me...it's such a cool sound!

I have 4 Fuzz Faces, 3 of them are modded by AnalogMan...one red dot NKT, a white dot NKT and a high gain NKT.

I like them all 3 but it just happened that the day I went to record my parts the red dot was on the board...IU did take anotehr Fuzz Face just in case the bias turned into an issue or whatever reason but the red dot di8d just fine so I used it.

FWIW, those are NOT the ones that clean up best...a white dot NKT is has BEST clean up of ANY Fuzz Face I've ever tried but the reds are a close 2nd...the clean parts in the verse still have the Fuzz Face on I just rolled back and picked lighter.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words!

Re: Eleanor Rigby

Very nice to hear your fingers man!! Hell of a take on an untouchable song, he is a talented man! Really warm and dense sounds, fabulous textures..... Hell of a gutty wind of on that solo at then end.

More please!

Re: Eleanor Rigby

Hey C,

I know this will make me sound somewhat dense, but I'm not very good at figuring stuff out by ear. The original tune uses C and Em in the verse's and Em6 & 7 along with C in the chorus. It sounds to me like this is a step or two lower, maybe E and something else in the verse? No clue about the chorus.

I don't want to ask for any private info, but I'm just curious about what key it's in and what the chords are, if you can say; just cause I dig it so much.

Thanks so much Kev!

Yeah, John has done a while album pretty much on his own...it's impressive and to make it work he's pretty young!

One thing about my woprk on that track was the textuers I was able to add...my little amps with a fuzz box worked really well against his master volume amp crunch...just a different sound.

Thanks for the kind words on the solo...it's funny, John kept on getting me to do more takes...I forget how many takes I did of the solo and of various things but the solo he used is a composite of 2 of the earliest takes I did!

It was also a trip to try and solo over a tune like that (and in the key of A flat minor to boot!)...it's really not my bag but it worked out!

No worries Jeff!

Thats what I mean when I say it's a reworking and not just a cover...the music is completely different!

To make it even more interesting John recorded his parts with his guitar tuned down a full step to D but had a capo at the first fret and played in the key of A minor...which is actually A flat minor...I played my parts tuned to standard and played in the key of A flat minor (which is not a fun key to solo over FWIW!).

Anyway, the cords are all different...the first part (and the chorus) vamps over an E major and an A flat minor...the verses are A flat minor and D flat minor and the bridge section is rather twisted the way it worked out becasue Johns parts involve a bunch of little chords and a moving bass line in a way and to add texture to it I played a handful of diads that added a nice harmonic overtone to Johns part...

It's a lot less complex than it sounds but it is rather different from the original!

Re: Eleanor Rigby

Thanks C, I would have never figured that one out, since I almost always play in standard tuning. And I hear what you mean in the bridges...it sounds really cool and simple, yet complex at the same time.

The creativity of songwriters never ceases to amaze me; and guys like you who can just pop into a session and crank out such cool stuff literally off the cuff.

HA!

Thanks so much...I wouldn't call my work amazing by a long shot but Johns take on the tune was rather cool.

I told John up front after getting a copy that the style of the tune and my style really weren't the same but he said thats what interested him so we went with it and I think the results are good so I guess it worked!

The only thing that made it hard was I had only heard the song a few times before I recorded my parts and the key issue...soloing in A flat minor is just not fun...no open strings and fewer licks to work with however it did make me play a little differnetly...just trying to find good notes to work with.

I did try to tune my guitar down a half step and record in the key of A minor so I could use open strings and play in a more familar key but as strange as it felt to me in the key of A flat minor it was somehow "right" so I just went with it...

Re: Eleanor Rigby

That was some real good stuff. I have heard that song murdered more than a few times in my life but that was an excellent re-make, feel good to be associated with some quality work doesn't it.

Nice playing and good sounds!

Re: Eleanor Rigby

I like it all ..... the new take on the song, the mix, the video, and especially your tone, feel and note selection. Great!

Thanks Watt!

I was nervous when John told me what the song was but after listening to it I knew he was on to something good.

It does feel good BTW...it's really pushed me to get some more stuff going!

Re: Eleanor Rigby

just back from vacation and home to wideband so i could finally check this

very nice work indeed - always cool to hear something reinterpreted ... your playing was certainly spot on and sounding fantastic - way to go
