Electro harmonix small stones phaser... Too little output?

When I use it with high gain sounds it's fine, but with clean sounds I notice a difference in output. The sound is just less loud. Is it due to the actual phasing effect more than the pedal itself?

When I have used phasers it seems to give the sound a far off sound. Like recording with the mic farther away. That could be your volume drop. BUt my ears may be devieving me.
