Broken Headstock.jpg

My friend's dog had a run in with his baby...

I know it's fixable (my Raptor had the same thing happen to it and it's fine now) but, how do I do it?

(The dog is, I think, still alive...)

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

I would align it and use a couple of splines to make sure it stays straight when you glue it and clamp it. I would use hide glue or titebond.

That's what I thought but, how do I go about it.

What size splines/dowels do I want to use..?

And is superglue a good idea or do I want wood glue or the like..?

Superglue is a negative. I would just google what others have done and find a method that you will be comfortable with. Don't take my word for anything i have only ever repaired one broken headstock.

I will do, mate. Thank you.

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

I agree - the dog is a menace. Have to put him down.

Here is where those big Dean headstocks shine - repairability!

Nice thing here is that it looks like a lot of flat surface which is good. Still, actual headstock repairs are always iffy. Good luck.

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

Titebond wood glue, rubber padded spring loaded metal furniture clamps and take your time...I've done it more than once and have always had good results

The finish itself might still be an issue after a repair like this but plyaing good and looking like it was never broken are 2 different things...

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

I was thinking hide glue maybe be better because it hasn't got as much creep as titebond.

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

That there is an authentic relic job. Same thing happened to dime's. at a gig though. Tite bond and clamps.

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

Proper clean up/prep work is a must, followed by proper set up, gluing, and clamping. Use Titebond glue! Then it should be good to go. If you have the ability to do a proper spline job on it, it would end up being stronger than before. Remember, TAKE YOUR TIME, and THINK EVERY THING THROUGH!

Re: !!! EMERGENCY !!! HELP NEEDED !!!

The original Tite-Bond, red label is best. Easiest to use, and best bond. Hide glue in pre-mix I have not had good luck with, and the stuff that you heat is a pain if you're not experienced and especially if you don't have the equipment.
