EMG 57, 58, or 85 for my PRS SE - Please help me choose

Re: EMG 57, 58, or 85 for my PRS SE - Please help me choose

If you can find a used 57 on Reverb, it might be worth your while to swap it in and out to compare against the 85. FWIW I really preferred the 57 and had them in all of my guitars before going passive. I still have one partscaster that is basically a ‘backup’ guitar with a 57 in it, and it really sounds damned good for the more modern, heavier thang. All the punch of the 85 but with just the right bit if clarity and string separation that my ears miss with the 85. If you don’t like it and you bought it used to begin with, you really won’t take much of a hit if you turn around and sell it. The solderless connection makes pickup swaps a breeze.

If there is a passive pickup that has punch, clarity, harmonics, and thickness like the 85, I’d love to hear it. The DiMarzio Ionizer 8 and Imperium 7 are similar, but they don’t do it with as much output. Everybody says EMGs make all guitars sound the same- not mine.

PAFs aren’t my thing for metal, either. My LP/SG has real ones... it sucks for the stuff I play.

For every person who says actives suck or hot bridges aren’t necessary, I can list an encyclopedia of examples to contradict that.

So here’s a twist...

My new Orange Dark Terror prefers the 81. The rig is a TS-mini into the Terror, POD XT Live in the loop for EQ, delay & verb, into the Orange 1X8. The 85 sounded good, but on a whim I swapped the 81 in, and holy hell... super mean!

Interesting. Yeah, well, that makes sense. Orange amps are usually voiced thick and juicy. I'm sure the more cutting biting tone of the 81 compliments that better.

What neck pickup are you using with the 81 in the bridge?

Another 81. I love them together. The pickup switch becomes a bitey/chunky switch. I’ve said it a bunch of times, but metal riffing on an 81 neck is the stuff.

The 81 in the neck does take gain like a champ!

As you’ve stated, the clean tones aren’t stellar, at least in a classic sense. But whatever... for the chugz, it’s tough to beat.
