EMG 707 alternative for 6 strings guitar

Hi,

I'm currently looking for a 6 strings pickup similar to EMG 707. The EMG is 7 strings only and there is no equivalent in 6 string. This is a mix between EMG 81 AND 85.

I'm not a big fan of the 81 or the 85 either... I'm more in between.

I currently have a guitar with black winter set and I love it.

Is the Nazgul the pickup I'm looking for? I like some bass and clarity but not as 85 or 81...

The 57 is kind of in between the 81 and the 85 in many ways. It's tighter and brighter than the 85, but it's fatter and wider than the 81. Might wanna take a look at that. Or the Fishman Fluence Modern Alnico in the bridge too.

I haven't played a 707, so take it as a grain of salt. I'm just going by your "in-between 81 and 85 description".

I think the Nazgul sounds nothing like either the 81 or the 85. If I had to say, it's probably closer to the 81, but it has a more passive EQ and feel. It's not as focused as the 81 or the 85 even.

Some passives may give you an active-like vibe, but overall, I think actives and passives have each got their own thing going on.

TBH, there are many passives that claim to have the active vibe. Some do more than others. The ones that I found have it more have been the DiMarzio Dominion (81 meets DiMarzio mids), Black Winter (81 tightness with more output and agression), and JB (EMG 85 with the EQ tilted more towards cutting than fat). But that's very loosely speaking. I'm sure many people are gonna dispute my opinion there.

EMG's preamp basically has a hi pass/lo pass and clipping sound that passives can't replicate exactly because they don't have preamps. You basically want a very mid-focused, mildly hot, and compressed passive to get close, but that will get you only 15-20% of the way there at most.

My suggestion is to stay within the active realm. Specifically, with EMG's classic series. Maybe try to listen to some clips of the 57, and maybe the Het or the 89. The 89 in humbucker mode is also kinda in between the 81 and 85, just leaning more towards the 85.

Different kind of active pickup. They're pretty bassy if you compare them to all of the classic series EMG's.
