EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

WITH FULL DISTORTION

F. Hails Railsologist
Hails Guys, I´m Backi arrived yesterday afternoon from Rio de Janeiro-RJ/BRAZIL. GET read for teh report of my trip. Q:p
If you noticed something different on me, warn me, i may be a little different from before the trip. Q:p

Well... i am here to ask for Help on the EMG Pickups.
I HAVE here a pair of emgs new in the box, never used... emg 85 and emg 81.
i would like to install them on my Fender Stratocaster MIJ and tune "HER" in D.
in the bridge i want a sound with a lot of bonecrushing/GRINDING mIDS, Solid Bass sound on the Low frequencies, and brilliant/VIVID highs .
with a moderated HIGH output.... which EMg should i install on the Bridge?
I supposed that 85 is the answer....
and in the neck, i want a sound, the same as the bridge, but with 2 Correction, Not too much Bass and not too much output... a Moderated output will be Very WELCOME. so i guess my tip on this one is the 81 right? But i am Affraid that i may Like The sound of 81 on both positions. ahahahah

Please guys... help me with your ultrasonical and DBSPL Tips AND CLIPS of emg on both position, with a considerable ammount of distortion.
Ultra Mega Super Hyper Bastard Black/death/thrash/fusion metal Hails to you all. I really missed you all my friends.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

For the bridge it seems like the 85 would be the best choice. It is bassier than the 81,,,more natural, warm sounding than the 81, and less trebly....... The problem is the neck position as i wouldn't put there the 81.....i find it extreme for the bridge position....i wouldn't even think of it for the neck position. You say you need a morderate output pickup for the neck......this isn't the case with the 81. I would not reccomend for the neck the 85 either cause i think it has enough bass for the neck position and you say you don't want that. So i was thinking about the emg 60....but here you must seek someone elses knowledge cause i have never tried it.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Hey Fenderiarhs
thank´s for the Reply. i´ll check it out
Q;P
Anyone MORE Guys?!?!!
is there a TONE GRAPHIC CURVE LIKE SEYMOUR AND DIMARZIO ON THE EMG WEBSITE for the 81/85 pickups?

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

I would first suggest the 85 in the bridge too. Are yours quick connects? If so, you could try both positions rather easily :) You might also want to wire them up at 18 volts for pure metal madness :D

there aer not enough hails and HAHAHahAaHAHA's in your typing.. you changed man ;)

jokes aside.. the 60 is supposed to have crushing mids and sounds damn sweet in the neck (listen to nothing else matters. those cleans are the 60)
as for the bridge, the 85 is richer than the 81 and many people find it WAY too trebbly in pretty much any guitar.

if it was my axe, i'd get an 85/60 combo for it.. i dont think you can go wrong with it (it's something like a JB/59 combo made by EMG, but thats just me i guess)

Q:P

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Haha...thanks mucho man, you're the first to recognize it!

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

If you're open minded about the neck tone, give the 81 a chance there. It's definitely different, but you may grow to like it.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Yah... for the neck... i would like to do a custom shop experience...
JB with ceramic magnet in the bridge and a custom custom in the neck or a Jb with less Bass in the neck.
What do yah think JB FROM HELL?!?!

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Without a doubt, 85 in the bridge 81 in the neck. I've got one of those Musician's Friend "Vintage Mahogany" Les Paul Studios (even the top is mahogany) that I put a set of Zakk Wylde pups in... the 85 is in the bridge and the 81 in the neck, and I couldn't be happier. I've also got a Jackson Dinky with 85b and 60n and that works nicely as well. My Hamer has a 25th anniversary chrome 81 set, but I think I'm going to change the bridge to an 85 eventually. While the 81 is a great pup for metal, I think it can get a little too bright in the bridge. IMO, the warmer pickup should be in the bridge and the brighter one in the neck, as it seems to balance the sound better. The first Jackson I got with EMGs had the 81 bridge and 85 neck... it was nice, but I very much prefer the 85 in the bridge with either an 81 or 60 in the neck.

Notable players today using the 85b and 81n are Jon Donais from Shadows Fall and the guys from Killswitch Engage. Steve Lukather also uses the 85 as his bridge pup. And back in the day when Dan Spitz played lead guitar for Anthrax, he also used the 85 in the bridge.

****ing hails TOEJAM(WHERE´S EARL? AHAHAHA) AND thank´s for the excellent reply.
i´m seeing that you agreee with me on the "IMO" stuff.
well...the only doubt that remain is the audio doubt. can you send me two clips with 85 bridge and 81 neck? virse versa too.?!

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

hails wfd!

+1! 85 in the bridge. imo, 81 in the neck may be too overpowering output-wise, but superb clarity there though. if you have the chance try a 60 or 89 in the neck. you may like it even more especially the 60.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

As far as a JB with a ceramic magnet, if metal is your goal, you'll love it. I stuck the magnets from an Invader into a JB trembucker (hence my name, JB From Hell :)) and it's hella-cool. I've thought about having one made with rails from the custom shop.

As far as neck pickups go, the only "real" neck pickups I have any experience with are the aforementioned EMG 81, and an Air Norton, which I now use as a bridge pickup :)

I did put a Duncan Designed HB-102B (JB copy) in the neck position of the guitar with the modded JB trembucker, and it was cool, though.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Happy Happy!!! 81 in the bridge 60 in the neck makes me very happy. Great clarity and crunch along with great chimey but warm cleans. Fruezenhaier!!!

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

I have a pair of EMG 60's in my Hamer and they have a ton of clarity, slice, and output (I'm used to PAF style pickups :) ) . I think that you'll really like the 60 in the neck if you are into metal. You can hear every not in a scale or cluster chord, even with pretty heavy distortion. These pickups are so clear, they have definately made me a better player. :burnout:

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Holy ****ty Benji26. Thank´s Man for the INFO.
I´ll re download the EMG 60 and emg 89 soundclips from the emg site to see.
Q:P
but the problem is, mine are quick connect, but i don´t know if there´s someone out there that would like to trade it with me. Q:/
AND Maybe i will be happy with 81 neck, even dispiting its high output... or, ... i guess i must install them and see what happens.
swap them and see teh final results.
Hails and thank´s

Hails!! The 85 actually does have a tiny bit more output than the 81, I kid you not. Even EMG's catalog mentions this. And about soundclips, sorry, I don't have any recording equipment at the moment. You won't be sorry with an 85 or 89 in the bridge and 81 (or 60) in the neck. The 60 is actually the brightest pickup EMG makes.
