EMG 81 + basswood = instawood?

Re: EMG 81 + basswood = instawood?

I've had 81s and 85s in basswood guitars, and liked both. I've also had them in alder, maple, and mahogany and liked that.

I've tried them in mahogany-maple top with floyd, mahogany-maple top fixed and basswood with floyd.
Fixed bridge mahog: Serious low-end grind very heavy sounding.
Tremolo mahog: Less low-end, the same cutting sound.
Tremolo Basswood: Again less low-end but less sharp and more roar (more of a hard rock sound). I think it suits basswood very nice.

That was my results (and not absolut).

Ibanez makes a lot of guitars with basswood bodies if you want to experiment with that setup. If you decide you don't like it, you'll still have the pickup to put in a new guitar.

Re: EMG 81 + basswood = instawood?

I think that depends on several factors ~
Cheap basswood from low end Ibanez came from asia these days , they sound quite different than American basswood.
honestly , they arent very good quality wood afterall .
Mahogany is more consistent and my friend has EMGs in his Les Paul and SG , and it makes them all sound very similar . EMG sound has less influenced from the wood and more from the Pick up itself.
So back to your question , i think Basswood with EMG prolly be a greater choice since the sound is less depending on the quality of the wood so low end basswood would definitely benefit from it . Maybe that's why some ppl think its' " the " wood for EMG ~

I had an 81 in my basswood schecter, and when I switched to an 85 I never looked back. It's just as great as the 81 but a lot warmer and more organic.
