EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

hell who, is doing this?? I'm just gonna do 16ths and 16th tripplets on the C string ;) :laugh2:

The guitar sounds a way darker than RG! The RG got some nasal sound which I like.... I want this guitar to be a bit more growling (this guitar sucks anyway but who cares?).
I gonna use a Tubescreamer as a mid/clean boost.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

Thanks so far! :D

Ah the emg website sucks...
The EMG-85 has more low end and less high end then the EMG-81. The EMG-81 has less low end and is brighter than the EMG-85.

Which artists using 85s? Unearth using 707 which is more like a 85 than a 81 right?

I play mostly "modern metal" like As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, Heaven Shall Burn, Poison The Well etc...

*edit*
Yeah and it will be tuned down to Drop C.

Which one would you suggest me?
Thx, Marcel xxx

Hello Marcel.
I would without a question say the EMG81.It's perfect for downtuned metal (I play tuned down to B).I play in a kind of gothic/death-metalband and play a lot of fast percussive riffs and tremolopicking (I think you guys call it that,Black Metal type of riffs) and it's perfect because the tight bottom-end doesn't make the sound too muddy. But then again, the ENGL-amp I use has a lot to do with it too. It's a true metalmonster with lots and lots of gain and bottom.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

The sound would be tight either I think, that's not the prob! I think the 85 has more balls and got a warmer sound?
I tend more to the 85....

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

I don't think an 85 in the bridge is a good choice for rythm but in the neck it's probably good for playing leads.Maybe you should go for the classic setup with an 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck?

It's hard to give advice because everybody has got their own idea about sound. If you think the 85 is the right for you,go for the 85.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

The classic setup is one thing about emgs I don't understand...
why put the bassier pup in the neck?
Or the 81/81 or 85/85 setup... I heard from no other pubs to put the same in bridge and neck? This is weird about emgs imo...

85 is used by Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, James Murphy, one guy in Shadows Fall, and nearly everyone on the Andy Sneap forum LOL.

I don't find the 85 to slur notes together at all, even on palmmuted chugs.

That song was all done with an 85 into a 5150II, and I don't think it gets muddy at all.

No,it sounded pretty good even if it's not really my type of music.

At 1:03 when it guitar is by itself you can hear the attack slurring....it's not hitting as hard an an 81 would and thus all the mutes are all running together, there's no separation between them. You can also hear it all over the main triplet riff.

It's cool if that's what you want, but that's what I hated about it and why I switched back to an 81.

Tightness and percussiveness in the bridge. If bass was all that was imporant in a bridge pickup we'd all be using Invaders.

People tend to like 85s in the neck because it's extra bottom and smoother attack smeers everything for killer legatto, and it's excellent for harmonics. People like 81s in the neck because they have a tighter sound with a faster attack and more separation between notes. People like 60s in the neck for it's prestine cleans, and some even like their super middy lead sound.

i'm a big fan of the 85 in the bridge but for what you describe the 81 might be a better choice

Thanks that helps me much more than the description on the emg website ;)

Thanks for the input guys..
It seems to me that the 81 suits metal perfect but the 85 suits the genre I'm into better...

Sorry Marcel,I'm swedish and I wonder.....what the hell is swede-core???????????
I guess it has something to do with hardcore and I'm sorry, but nothing good can come out of that. :nana:
I'm just kidding, but I think you said something about playing metal in your first post.Anyways I hope you'll get the sound that you want. :fing2:

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

I'm just kidding either :D ... I mean metalcore which got some swedish melodic death metal (?) riffs... but I don't wanna start a discussion about styles etc...
that was the reason I've mentioned some bands which are well known I think...
