I bought this pickup on a limb, and hell did it pay off..... I love this pup EMG can really make pups for metal! Practically nothing else, but they can make pickups for metal.

Any others have experience with this pup??? You like it? Or hate it?

Re: Emg 89

Is your amp solid state? I'm interested in EMGs as well but have a hybrid amp. Interested what people with EMGs and SS amps think of them.

Re: Emg 89

I did the same a couple of weeks ago on an ESP Viper 30th anniversary model. I really wish I had 600 bucks lying around.

Re: Emg 89

Made a Warmoth with EMG split coil pup, pull for single coil. I loved the sound of that. Nice mids and plenty of headroom.

Re: Emg 89

I have an 89, it was in the bridge position of my Les Paul Custom, I never really used to single coil feature because it killed the volume. I recently replaced it with an Antiquity Humbucker and the difference is amazing, I think the Antiquity is even better for metal than the EMGs. Just better tone, you don't need all the out put, I used to blow preamp tubes like crazy w/ EMGs and a compressor and an OD. Hopefully the Antiquitys will take care of that.

I play EMG 81/85 through a Line 6 amp.. sounds great!

Blind,
What style of music? Does anyone use EMG's for other than Metal? What kind of versatility? Bridge? Neck?

Re: Emg 89

Only problem i have with it is the dramatic step in gain between the SA and 85 modes. EMG should add a trim pot, if they haven't already..

Ya switching to the single coil does kill the volume but its amazing how they did that...

Also i have a solid state and a small tube amp and the EMG sounds real good in both amps.

If switching to SA kills volume, how do you deal with using this on the fly? In the middle of a song? How about adding an afterburner?

I have a Line 6 Flextone III Plus that I would like to have the EMG's play thru... are tones other than metal available? Classic rock? Blues?

It would be a good idea to add an afterburner, but they dont have it where i live... also this pup can attain other tones other than metal... it is an all around good pickup. Im not sure if it would be able to do classic rock maybe we can get some help from someone else....

Although i wouldnt be able to switch modes while on the fly.
