Emg Aftermarket electronics (EMG-SPC) on duncans?

Hey, I'm building a warmoth 7 string, mahogany neck/body, rosewood fretboard, quilt maple top. On its own I'm guessing it will be pretty warm, so I'm going with bright pups. (Jazz in the neck, and a custom wound SH-12 or SH-10 in the bridge, haven't decided which yet), but I dont wanna lose the "fat" option.

Its designed for singles, but I'm thinking maybe I could use it with my hummers to add some fatness if I want it. What do you guys think? Anyone have any experience with this particular item?

Yes, it is well worth it. It can be used with ANY pickup. Passive, active, single, bucker, P-90, whatever!

It wont really add fatness (maybe some), it will add mids and also hotness when it is turned up. For fatness, the EXG is good. Hell, both are worth it.

Yes, I have used them and I have no clue why more players have not tried or been interested in these items. Especially the players that post on here every week something to the effect of, "I like this pickup but, it needs a bit of/more/less/etc ____."

Doesn't the EXG do the opposite of what I'm looking for? Says it cuts mids and adds bass/trebs. Unless it has a "zero" position midway through the pot and can be turned "backwards" to boost mids instead of cut them?

a bit lost.

Also, some of the EMG bass mods/controls look really cool, but i'm guessing they wont work so well for guitar?

When the EXG is on zero it has no effect. When you turn it up, it adds bass and treble, as well as cutting mids.

I don't think it works well on overdrive, but that's my opinion. It gives the pickups a nice clear acoustic tone though.

The SPC I'm not that happy with- it's nowhere near the Clapton mid boost

I used to have an all-EMG-equipped gitar that I installed the SPC on. I have no experience with it on other pickups, but on EMG SA and S singles, it did a great job of thickening up the sound so they sounded like humbuckers.

I didin't know it could be used on passive pickups as well. If that's so, then I'm with theodie - it could be a great solution for those who like a certain pickup but want more mids.

This is just to my ears but, the EXG seemed to warm everything up for me. I never thought looking strictly at what EMG says about them and they effect on EQ was all that accurate.

The bass control would work but, I am not sure how the frequencys would work with guitar tones. It may be very interesting.

i think you must have lost some high end hearing bro :wall:

the exg boosts the bottom and top but pulls the mids out which is what i hear as fat. its a cool sound but not a fat boost

the spc on the other hand does pretty much what you are looking for. adds some fat mids and smooths out the treble a little

My experience is the less gain you use with these modules, the more pronounced effect they have. More distortion and gain tend to compress them as well as their frequency range.

I used it with two EMG 81s once. If you thought that the 81s were hot, the SPC turned them into real firebreathers. A very nice control, I still have it even if I don't sport the 81s that much anymore. It works well with humbuckers. I'd love to try it out with singles. I'd like a strat with the Gilmour EMG setup.
