Has anyone played these a lot? Is there any huge difference between these and the regular 81/60?

Yeah sadly EMG fans are few here. You will find plenty though that will rush to tell you how much they suck and how they are lifeless and have no tone.
That being said I havent been able to spend much time with them. I played a set the other day installed in a 76 Explorer reissue and compared it to the 81 in my warlock (not a great comparison i know) But they do definitely have their own thing going on. You can still hear the family resemblance to the 81's but they are definitely something different. They sound good though my preference is still for the 81's to me thats the classic emg sound that ive known forever and loved but if your after something new and a bit different the het set might blow your skirt up.

To answer your question yes, the "het set" is a X series emg model. EMG also sells a 81/60x chrome top set which is pretty much the same compared to the het set. both are X series, what you get in the het is the ability to pay for name and pseudo bobbins. The 81/60X chrome set your paying for the re-voiced coils and some cool brushed chrome, they are cheaper. I really would steer away from the het set only because well as long as Metallica has been making music they are not tone aficionado, maybe they are at home, but i don't see a value in getting a named pups from very many artists. The 81/60x set is wonderful, you can get some nice cleans from the neck 60x, and the 81x sounds nothing like its first generation 81. hope that helps

I use 81/60 for now and from what I read there isn't much differences between that normal and the "het" set aside from cosmetics...I have not tried both sets though so That info ay not be totally accurate.
You might get more detailed information regarding differences on the EMG forums.

No dude you are flat incorrect here. The het set is not just an X set and doesnt sound the same as an X set. The 81X is the exact same pickup and preamp as the original 81 just with -6db of gain.

So you have tested them, do they sound different over just a stock set of EMG 81/60's? I read in a few places they were just the same set with some cosmetic differences but I wasn't sure how accurate that information was.

i own both sets i have a promo het set and a 81/60x set, think what you want. I don't care what you think you know. so ill just jsut be flat incorrect here and you keep reading internet literature.

Just search with youtube - there are several decent comparison videos. Briefly: more definition, closer to passives, less gain.

They are not exactly the same, the X series output impedance is only 2K and requires an active tone control.

The X series is the replace the 18v mod that people have been doing to their EMGS (using two nine volts) which is supposed to increase the headroom on the pups, while also producing less distortion. I don't think they sound different (EMG claims that they have a more organic sound IDK), but the benefits aren't that bad. The Het Set is different in that the pole pieces on the neck are taller and have different cores than the 60 (not sure what it does). The bridge doesn't use a single blade pickup but have pole pieces for each string, which gives a better definition on each string and cleaner low end.
I have owned a set of them (couldn't resist) and they didn't sound bad, but I wouldn't put them on another guitar. I had them in a Jackson Rhoads that got stolen from me a while back (about a year ago). I didn't really think they were all the hype, but they did sound different from the 60/81's. I definitely wouldn't recommend them.
I ended up buying a new Rhoads and putting in a set of SD Blackouts, and those have more tone than I know what to do with. They sound almost as organic and clean as the SD Distortions that I love so much. if you want a set of actives, those are the ones for you.
