EMG passive singles

So like most folks here I started with the EMG 60/81. In my case in the mid 90s. Moved to 18 volts. Then over the past few years I've moved to Duncan and passives.

I like EMGs in my "set and forget" volume knob only metal guitars. If I want more tone options and versatility, I go passive.

I've recorded using EMG HZ3s and HZ4s with some success. I like them because they sound similar to the active originals with a bit warmer response and softer transients. They're also easier to split than active EMGs, which usually require more proprietary stuff or different pickup models and isn't worth the trouble, IMO.

Over the last few years I've noticed EMG really expand its S and SRO passive lines. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. One of the things drawing me to them is A/Bing pickups with them should be really easy due to the quick connect system.

My only experience with EMG singles is with their venerable SA and S pickup lines. I found the SA superior. I have them in an SA/S/81 HSS Dinky with an EXG mid range scoop control. However, I found they lacked the subtlety and complexity of passive, vintage singles, and instead sounded like lower output humbuckers.

My only gripe with a lot of EMG stuff, including their passive bass pickups, is they have that usual EMG sound where the frequency range is quite narrow and the area around 2 khz is quite pronounced, giving that usual EMG middy brittleness that some people dislike. Sometimes I enjoy it because it cuts through the mix--other times I need something else.

Anyway, if the S HZ line is comparable to their HZ line, they're at least worth a try in my book.

Thanks.
