They do sound stratty........but NOT AS STRATTY as some good passive pickups like cs69, 54, ssl1, fralin VH e.t.c. They are very clean, have a slightly hotter output than traditional single coils, and give a nice clean sound (and a not so nice mild overdriven tone)

+1. They will give you the clean Gilmour tone. I had the Gilmour set, I found they were too fat sounding for true strat sounds, they sounded minda like P-90's or humbuckers.

They are stratty enough for many a strat player
like dave gilmour for one prime example
I use a 89 set in a two bucker guitar which when they are split is a SA in each and i love them for leads and cleans.
best of both worlds for a metal player like myself
i get the strat tones when needed and then i can get the roar of a 85 when not split.

FWIW, for distorted stuff i like them more than traditional singles

They are very good, they excel for players who use a lot of effects in their chain (like Gilmour).

with the 89 you get both a SA and a full 85 bucker in one!:cool2:

Under medium to high gain they respond very well, and i think better than their passive counterparts. Where i think they are lacking is the low gain, bluesy, "clean but dirty" sound......there's something unnatural in the sound in this case.

No, the SA part of a 89 is different, and the humbucker part doesn't quite sound like a 85. You can say that of the other EMG pickups the SA and 85 are closests, but they aren't quite the same.
I don't know whether they have one or two magnets in there, but either way, the magnetic field is reshaped compared to the single-purpose ones.
