It’s about the tone, not what they look like under epoxy & covers - who cares. Their HZ line is their budget offering anyway, even if they are made in Santa Rosa, CA. Their successful line is of course the active line, and again who really cares what's under the permanently fixed cover? Either you like the tone or you don't.

what did you do about the screw holes? or did you just get an iommi style cover

I used "fake" tops to keep the old/stock look

I know the quality of the work looks bad, I had to use a dremel to grind it away since I didn't have my belt sander. I had done one, but didn't take pics. Then I started this one and had to finish/do most without the belt sander, so yes it does look pretty rough (or hideous) to say the least

The sides taken off...

Since I wasn't able to finish it at the time, I left the top black part as it was...

And again, since I wasn't done with the whole thing, I first put it in my explorer...

After that, I finished both and put them in my lp copy...

i would really like to see how the 81's and 85's are built now. i was thinking of getting a set, but now i'm having serious second thought.

Oh because you know this proves that everyone is obviously having problems with them and they break down all the time.


I'm really glad people on this board are commenting on build quality because you guys have been building pickups for years.

MJ, those gold covers look cool, I'm always impressed with your projects, did the covers make any difference to sound/output at all?

Those pics of the pup uncovered put me in mind of those horrible things that Gibson used in the Mauradur.

I tooke the cover off my EMG H4- which is a passive pickup they make and it sounds like sh1t just like the rest of their pickups.

i really honestly don't mind that epoxy being there.. that means lowest microphony possible to me - look inside most active pickups and i reckon it'll be the same story!

and EMGs are built pretty well, i've always though.. you could drop an EMG in a glass of water and it wouldnt make any odds...

yeah i dont see how if it looks bad it will sound bad. well i mean maybe this one does. but still, it doesnt mean all their pickups suck. i think im still gonna get some emgs and do waht mj did. i think emgs sounds pretty cool.

I'm not an emg fan... but you're not supposed to take the cover off... so who cares what it looks like or what they used underneath, it was never meant to be seen.

If I were to open my EMG's and find they are filled with mozarella cheese and wrapped with condoms, I'd still play them.
To me they sound great and that's what matters
But I won't check anyway...
