Emgs in a maple axe?

Would emgs sound ok in a bright sounding maple bodied axe? This axe is maple, set neck, ebony board, brass nut. Very bright with even dark sounding pups in it. Thinking it would be a good recipient for active pups.
please advise.. thanks!

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

Okay, this is my take on the whole EMG thing. From my own experience, yours may vary, EMG's pretty much sound the same no matter what you put them in. This is due to the whole preamp thing.

YMMV though.....

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

IMO, you can put EMGs in anything and it will sound the same ... pretty interesting trick, if you have a cheap guitar ... I have 2 maple guitars, and they both have Screamin' Demons in 'em ... much prefered to emg!!!

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

I'd have to agree with that. EMG's are useful at times (they're great in basses), but pretty much have their own sound in guitars. Dump a Demon or even a '59 in that maple body.

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

If I were going to put someting in a maple body, it would be something with a little more warmth to compensate for the inherent brightness of maple. Then I would get a padded strap to compensate for the inherent weight...

WIMP! :D
Hehe ... Yeah, those Lynch guitars are quite heavy! :)

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

Does anyone else think the "Screamin Demon" is the most misleadingly named pickup ever? It neither screams, nor sounds demonic.

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

I have to disagree slightly about the EMG's. In a **** wood, like basswood or agathis, it will sound like ****. In my Alder/Maple Jackson, the EMG85 sounds wonderfully, and in a mohogany guitar, it definitally would sound darker/have more lows, maybe not as much as a passive, but it would be there.

No offense, but I think the Tone Zone is total crap.

Ditto. Get a CC for the bridsge and an APH for the neck. This set works great in my all maple Carvin DC127-T.

Hehe ... very true, JBfH ... Well, the pup CAN and DOES scream in a Lynch guitar ... the harmonics practically come out when you fret a note normally.

Sounds like an interesting guitar, what guitar is it and would you be willing to sell it to me?

I've got lots of experiences with active EMGs (especially the 81) and the Tone Zone. And I'd never touch both, maybe an 85 but I'd never get an 81 ever again! The Tone Zone is muddy in any guitar except an Ash bodied, maple neck guitar at least that's what a guy once told me when I told him how much I hated the TZ :newangel: . The only good thing I have to say about the TZ are the clean ups, they totally rock for a bridge pick up! The EMG81 always sounded the same in any guitar I've heard it in from mahogany to Alder. I've had the EMG81 for about a year and the TZ for 8 months. Never again! :yell:

Re: Emgs in a maple axe?

I saw an all Flame Maple V220 but I didn't have the funds, a week later I did and it was snapped right in front of my nose because I was too late! Kahler trem and everything, I'm still sad about that axe. These are great, my favorite all time guitarplayer Marty Friedman used to play 'em and swear by them. But I believe they were neck-thru, are you sure about the set-neck part?
