Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

Now, if you compare EMG 81's with 18 volts to the Duncan Heavy Metal LiveWire... that would be a good comparison. I like both and they work in different situations...

ever hear of a little band by the name of lamb of god?

SDs rule for metal

plus have the advantage of being more versatile, better clean, less sterile, dont chew through batteries, dont require you to change your stock pots and switch, and their made by a guy who plays guitar

Was this post pulled out of the internet rumor bin??

Better clean is BY FAR DEBATABLE...try an EMG 60....great pickup.

The whole sterile thing.....geez haven't heard that 100 times on the internet...

And it's obvious you've never used them because they certainly don't chew through batteries. I've gone a full year of rehearsals and 3 gigs/week on ONE battery....and I didn't need to change it...I just changed it to be safe.

Ahhh...gotta love the internet.

I'm waiting to hear that Dimarzios are processed sounding next......

hear of em? damn right i am a huge fan!
yeah willie and mark use the duncan stuff(invaders and JB) and they get a great tone i happen to love LOG tunes
I also use duncan stuff as well as EMG's so i really dont get your point with this?
you say duncans rule for metal?
I know about 100 players that play ONLY metal and use ONLY emg that would dissagree with you!

+1 I love the battery rumors that surround emg's. No one bothers to read the emg website that says they easy last 1000-3000 hours playing time.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

I gotta tell ya! I got an 81-85 and im in NO HURRY to change them for Duncans. Though I would like to try them in my Les Paul for curiosity sake.

I just need another guitar for the duncans....I'll be working for that later!

Technically I can't choose whose better because I haven't had duncans in my axe.

This is another TITS or ASS comparison right? Which one is Better ooooohhhhhhh?!

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

Dont like EMG's >>they suck the life out of my les paul

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!

I'd rather cut off my penis with a rusty breadknife :saeek:

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

I played pretty much all the pickups my music store sells (E.G. Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, Gibson, Bareknuckle, ETC.).

Although they all sound great, It all comes down to what tone you want from your guitar. I could eaisly say that EMGs sound like crap clean and they are lifeless or I could say they sound great and own Duncans; an opinion can go either way.

I've found that all pickups are good for one thing or another, but no pickup can do everything--just like guitars.

Stick to what you like and create your own sound/tone. If you think it rocks, then play the hell out of it.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

dude you guys know SD makes active pickups too right? The LiveWire Metal pickup is the same as the EMG-81 except it gives almost 25% more gain, and has a LOT more mids then the 81....... other then that they both frikkin rule for metal.

I personally preferr the SD LiveWire metal because the EMG81 is GREAT but it sounds like it has too much high, sounds kinda staticy at times... but the LiveWire metal is GODLIKE. takes 2 9-volts..... ive only had my livewire set for about a month, but my friends got emg-81s in his bc rich warlock guitar and he hasnt changed the batterier for 3 full months, still sounds KILLER!

so EMG81s are awesome for metal, but the SD LiveWires are just as good (if not better :P).
think thats a biased opinion? well by metal im talking about bands like..

Behemoth, Dark Funeral, Death, Gorgoroth, Vader, Iced Earth, Nevermore

and if youve never heard of any of those bands then you dont know what metal is :P

P.S. lamb of god is soft stuff!, and dont forget your amp is like 75% of your sound anyways.. cmon

yes, and i think theyre f*cking awful. but duncans are used by megadeth, maiden, and (was by) dimebag. all them completely blow away lamb of god or anything similar, but they use duncans too so i get your point.

Funny how you keep feeling the need to refer to it only as a "rumor" when other folks have had the same impression.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

I played active pickups for about 10 years via a stock Charvel Model 5. I Loved the extra drive it gave my Carvin X100b amp. But these days I cant stand the tone of it anymore (or lack of).

I had gotten so far away from a "real" guitar sound that I am STILL having trouble getting used to a more traditional sound. With the actives I had massive bottom end, over sensitive harmonics, and blistering overdrive at the slightest touch. But NONE of the actual wood of the guitar GUITAR tone comming through.

Now that I am back to passives I can really tell the difference. The guitar itself actually shines through. and there is so much more dynamics to the sound and feel. And EVERYTHING in the chain matters again. Tubes, speakers, all make a difference again.

But thats just my experience with actives.... yours may be completely different.

Well rumors are things that aren't true right??

Sterile means "Lacking imagination, creativity, or vitality"......the last thing that EMGs lack is vitality or "life" in their tone.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

I have never used actives but I had a freind who did and what he said made sense and was probably why i didn't. He said that actives tend to compress your sound in such a way that you lose the nuances of your playing to a degree. That it makes you sound like anyone else who plays that type of active, but thought they were the bomb on bass for that reason. The compression. Picking nuances have much to do with your individual sound so i can see this. Yet case in point; David gilmour used Emgs at one time so they can't be all bad. Hope that helps.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

i use both. I have a LP Custom in black that i blacked out all the hardware on and installed EMGs. I have an EMG 81 in the bridge and a 60 in the neck and i absolutely love it. My other LP Custom has stock pickups i believe and they sound perfect so I left it alone. However both my USA BC Richs have Seymours in them. I think they both have their purpose. I don't know that I would want EMGs in either of my Richs though.

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

Active EMG's are as expected more powerful but their sound is pretty concentrated. This means that you can only get a narrow band of frequencies out of them in very high output. Thats why their sound feels fake sometimes. BUT they are much more quiet and have great sound definition. There are active Seymours also!!!!!

Re: EMGs VS Seymour Duncans

You must try both to choose . Never decide having only heard samples.
