Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more power

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

Well, something went wrong and my speaker did not arrive in the shipment. There was another thread about why Eminence is not more popular, international marketing does not seem to be that well-oiled machine as Celestion is.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

Yeah, I haven't found a dealer here that carries Eminence that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for one (I'm in Mexico too).

I'm curious about the CV-75, but at the price my guy (who also deals Celestion) can get me one, I just went ahead and ordered some Relic 30's off the US myself.

Honestly, Celestions are a better deal all around here, IMO. I get why some people dig the Governor or the V12, but I'd much rather have the real deal V30 myself because a.they're easier to find here, b. they're cheaper here, c. they sound better IMO, lol.

Well, these guys are the official dealers for Mexico, go figure.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

i love the sound of a well worn greenback but havent really found anything that does that tone with higher power handling without loosing something, hasnt stopped me from trying though

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

I love my GB-128. I got it to replace the stock 20W OEM Eminence speaker in my Ampeg J-12T. That speaker was good, but I was gigging in a loud band, and I needed to take its significant speaker distortion out of the tonal equation. I was happy with the choice. I felt the tone ended up basically the same (which I wanted), but it just held together better when the amp was really cranked.

Well, I eventually got a Celestion Lynchback. I still don't know anything about Geenbacks yet but I am happy with the Lynchback. I was like 'meh' when listening in isolation here at home but it was really good yesterday at rehearsal, it is amazing how much perception changes when playing with a band. As advertised rhythm cuts through and the lead sound is very good, actually I think it is a great all around speakers as I also liked cleans and overdrive. With the right guitar, I mean a versatile guitar and some Lynchbacks I think you ca have a nice and versatile rig but it is high gain is where it really shines.

Congrats!

I've heard it stated that the Lynchback is a marrying between the two speakers George used alot back in the day. One being a V30 and they didn't mention the name of the other, but IIRC, he used V30s and Purple Fanes back in the day (I could be wrong, my memory is a little fuzzy).

But if the Lynchback ends up not being your thing, I've heard it said that the Creamback NEO sounds alot like a well broken in Greenback. But I can't verify that since I have yet to hear a Creamback NEO Creamback in person

From this interview it was my understanding they took the Greenback as a starting point then tighter low end (which I have read is good for the rock and metal that I like) and more watts plus whatever.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

The Peavey Sheffield 1200’s were also supposed to be a higher powered aged greenback, specifically the ones in evh’s beaten up 1960A. They tend to be very hit or miss with most people, you either like them or you don’t. I actually prefer my 5150 cab to my v30 loaded cabs.

I think the biggest issue you find is that greenback means more than one thing, there’s often two different models people are referring to when they say greenback. The other is that anytime you change something, in this case to increase power handling, you have to change the design somewhat, so you may be hard pressed to find an exact higher powered equivalent, and part of its desired quality is likely due to its lower power rating. Also most of what you will find is that most companies like eminence aren’t trying to 100% clone the sound of them, they are more or less trying to offer a product that more of an updated version, by building off of the qualities they think people might find desireable, but get rid of the shortcomings.

Two different models? You mean Heritage 20w and MIC reissue 25w?

There are so many "greenback" models around I'm not sure what you refer to...

Not specifically the MIC, but that the term green back is a general term for the speakers appearance and not the actual speaker name, more than one model has been called greenback. For example Marshall used both the G12M, and the G12H throughout the 60’s and 70’s extensively, and both had the green plastic backs, as well as other models, it was just the appearance of many celestions back then. So saying you want to have greenbacks or want them is kind of vague since they are two different speakers, and both sounded good and were iconic in their own right. Which green back do you want? That is the real question

And there is G12S aswell... I wouldn't use term greenback for anything except G12M, because there is such a distinctive difference in them due to the magnet size.

If you look at the old models, the magnet cover, like you said, is rather meaningless. Many G12M speakers that are by all accounts "greenbacks" didn't have it.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

when i say or refer to greenback i always mean the g12m even though as mentioned, many celestions had a green plastic magnet cover. but these days there are multiple versions of the g12m so it is a little confusting

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

The best Pete Thorn tones I liked are ones he explains uses Greenbacks. I don't have a real expensive marshall amp but he is kind of the reason why I wanted to try greenbacks. Here Greenbacks are always out of stock, Eminence distributor did not deliver and Lynchback seems to be an overlooked speaker which was a happy accident for me. I may try some G12M Greenbacks or Eminence Private Jacks later.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

To even add more gas to the fire, different iconic players preferred different versions of the G12M, as they were available with different resonance frequencies, which slightly changed their sound, and Marshall used both.

Pete is one of those that says that the Creamback Neo sounds like a broken in Greenback.

Yep, but then again Creamback Neo is not being shipped to Mexico yet.
