Eminence Governor wow!

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

Eminence "struck gold" with their Red Coat and Patriot line of speakers. If you cannot find a fit for you and your amp with one of those offerings, you need to take some more lessons..... :)

Lets not forget the Legend series. Those are some great speakers and at times are more preferable over any of the Redcoat or Patriots. Great prices too.

A guy was just asking about the 1028 in another post.
Yeah, the GB12 is one of the best speakers ever made. At 50 watts, it is a good fit for almost any amp that uses a 1x12 or 2x12.

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

is a Wizard good with Vox amps, or is it too bright?

It might be if you're trying to tame the brightness of your amp a bit. I tried a Tonker once and it was warm and smooth, and much better for a bright amp. My favorite is the Red Fang which has an alnico magnet, but it's more expensive.

Yeah, I had 2 Weber California in a BF/SF Twin. I pulled one of the Cali and added a Tonker. It really filled in Anything the Cali did not do, or did to excess.
The Tonker is another excellent speaker, especially where high power (and high end) is an issue.

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

I have only tried a few but I've never been disappointed by Emis.

The wizard is exquisite
Their FDM attenuation in the REignmaker is amazing (both tonally and attenuation-wise)
Now I have a diagonal 2x12 with two Governors in...
Can't seem to do wrong with this brand.

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

Anyone used a Governor on a JCM900?

I haven't cranked my JCM900 yet, but at very low volumes with the preamp gain dimed, the Governor seemed to have too much top end "sizzle". It appears to me that the G12T-75 suited the JCM900 better. Or maybe I just need to crank it up some more?

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

I still want to try the gov/manowar combo, that's supposed to be badass.

I wish I had the money for one of your 16 ohm govs.

I currently have 2 Man O Wars in my Marshall JCM900 combo, and they sound great. I just didn't care for the shrilly highs (ala icepick!) that the stock Celestions had, and the JCM()) 4102 is known for being capable of piercing highs if not tamed. I have a Governor on order, and can't wait to install it to hear if what I've read is true 'bout the combination of those, and the guy at Eminence that I talked to said that is an extremely popular pair - I can't wait! I got it to try to tame the high end the 900 has, but from everything I read so far that is supposed to be a great, great pairing. I'll post once I've got some hours on it.

Played on the Gov/MOW pairing tonight - can't wait for the Gov to be broken in a bit more. There's still quite a bit of highs, but that's likely from the amp as it is it's nature. I am absolutely diggin' it so far though. The Gov brought some lows out of the amp that I wasn't hearing before. I'm REALLY starting to be quite fond of Eminence! Always get stellar advice and input from them also. Great company, and kickass speakers.

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

I'm glad to hear you like it, but what's with people bumping a bunch of my old threads? Anyway, Eminence has a lot of awesome offerings. I only came to appreciate the Legend series kind of recently. They're a tremendous value yet sound as good as any of the Patriot or Red Coat series. There are a bunch of great speakers in their line that you don't hear a lot about like the RWB, Screamin Eagle, Red Fang, Man O War and Private Jack. I have found that I have to basically consider 5 things when buying a speaker.

1. Do I want to brighten or darken your tone?
2. Do I want to balance or shift some aspect of the EQ?
3. Do I want to smooth or make your sound more aggressive?
4. Do I want to make it louder or quieter?
5. Do I want a faster or slower breakup?

In the case of the Governor, it's good at doing a couple of things like bringing out a lot of mid range detail and smoothing things out a little. The V30 is a comparable speaker which is extremely versatile and probably the most popular worldwide. It has a spiky mid range which seems to be excellent for recording but difficult to get a your ideal overall tone. The Governor is a bit smoother and the mids aren't as spiky as the V30, but it has mids that kind of dominate everything else. Over time the mids sink it a bit and you start getting a nicer low end and more singing high end.

Right now I'm evaluating speakers for my Bogner Goldfinger 90. I'm using a Mesa Black Shadow at the moment which to me sounds like a modded G12T75. It's kind of dark with a prominent low end, cut mids, and prominent and chirpy high mids and treble. My goal is to find a speaker that retains the chirpy high mids and treble, but has a little more mids and balance in the low end. I'm thinking Man-o-War at this point but considering a Legend as well.

Well post back and give the verdict on the Governor.

G12K100 or the older g12H100 is chunkier than a g12T75. It has the most girth of the higher powered celestions and works great in open back cabs. I had one in my 900 MkIII combo. I had gt1275's back in the 90s when i used a 900 dually half stack tho. The eminence tonal equivalent i believe is called the tonker.

I'm still considering a pairing of a Governor/Wizard in a 2x12 for use with my Splawn Quick Rod and Toe-Knee SLO clone.

Threads like this aren't helping my GAS :D

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

What would you say about an X patter of Governors and Swamp Thangs in a JCM900 Marshall slanted cab ?

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

Yep, Eminence makes some good stuff.

I have a Legend GB128 in my Ampeg combo, and it sounds real nice. Not all that expensive, and made in the U.S.A. too.

Re: Eminence Governor wow!

zombie thread alert

I just received the Governor to replace the stock speaker of my jet city 2212.
The stock speaker according to jet city is basically a clone of the legend V1216.
I was trying to get more detailed mids and cut-off some high end with this change / a more British type of tone.

Result: a bit too much of success! I noticed a brutal cut-off of the high frequencies and pretty much all that was left is the mids.
Haven't played a lot or at high volume but this is my initial impression.

Also I don't think it sounds anything like a V30 which I owned for a while, maybe there are similarities in the feel between these two speakers but EQ wise I think the governor is super smooth while the V30 is super harsh.

PS: I also have a GB128 in a 1x12 cab which I use with a HT-5 with GREAT results. This speaker didn't work as good with the jet city because it allowed some super high frequencies of the JC to come through that weren't pleasing to the ear.

Sad to hear you didn't like it. We experiment and sooner or later we find the set up with the perfect mojo. Be patient you will get there.

I see you are in Athens. My heart goes out to your city, first the fires then the floods. I hope you and your loved ones made it through everything safely.
